Role and Responsibility.

Telematics / Connected Vehicle Engineer

Locations: Bangalore, India / Orange County, California, USA

Employment Type: Full-time / Contract

Experience: 4–10+ years, depending on level

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Telematics / Connected Vehicle Engineer to design, integrate, and support connected-vehicle and fleet telematics solutions.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working across vehicle hardware, embedded systems, communication networks, telematics devices, cloud platforms, APIs, and vehicle data. The role will focus on enabling reliable collection and transmission of vehicle information such as GPS/location, vehicle operating parameters, diagnostics, fault information, utilization, and vehicle health data.

Experience working with telematics solution providers, OEM connected-vehicle platforms, fleet-management solutions, or aftermarket telematics devices is highly desirable.

An additional area of interest is the use of vehicle and historical telemetry data for vehicle-health monitoring, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and failure prediction.

Key Responsibilities

Telematics & Connected Vehicle Integration

* Design, integrate, test, and support vehicle telematics and connected-vehicle solutions.

* Integrate telematics hardware/devices with vehicle electronic systems and cloud platforms.

* Work with vehicle interfaces and protocols such as CAN, CAN FD, OBD-II, J1939, UDS, Ethernet and related automotive communication protocols.

* Interface with ECUs, gateways, sensors, GPS/GNSS modules, cellular modems, and Telematics Control Units (TCUs).

* Troubleshoot issues across hardware, embedded software, vehicle networks, cellular connectivity, cloud platforms, and applications.

Vehicle Location & Connectivity

* Implement and support solutions for capturing and transmitting:

* GPS/GNSS location

* Vehicle movement and trip information

* Mileage and utilization

* Speed and driving events

* Ignition and vehicle status

* Geofencing events

* Experience with cellular technologies such as 4G/LTE/5G, SIM/eSIM and IoT connectivity is desirable.

* Understand challenges related to connectivity, latency, offline data storage, retransmission, and remote-device management.

Vehicle Health & Diagnostics

* Capture and interpret vehicle diagnostic and operational information including:

* Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

* Battery/voltage status

* Engine and powertrain parameters

* Fuel/energy consumption

* Temperature and sensor information

* Vehicle mileage and operating hours

* Component/system health indicators

* Develop or integrate solutions for remote vehicle diagnostics and vehicle-health monitoring.

* Work with engineering teams to translate raw vehicle signals into actionable vehicle-health information.

Telematics Platform & Cloud Integration

* Integrate vehicle/telematics data with enterprise and cloud platforms using REST APIs, MQTT, streaming technologies, event-based architectures, and other integration mechanisms.

* Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud is desirable.

* Work with telematics solution providers and technology partners to integrate their platforms into customer environments.

* Support high-volume ingestion and processing of vehicle telemetry data.

* Develop integrations between telematics platforms and fleet-management, maintenance, ERP, analytics, or other enterprise applications.

Predictive Maintenance & Analytics – Preferred

Candidates with experience applying analytics, machine learning, or AI to connected-vehicle data will be strongly preferred.

Relevant experience may include:

* Predictive vehicle maintenance

* Remaining Useful Life (RUL) estimation

* Component failure prediction

* Vehicle-health scoring

* Battery-health prediction

* Anomaly detection

* Fault-pattern identification

* Maintenance optimization

* Fleet reliability analytics

Ability to work with data scientists and engineering teams to convert vehicle telemetry → health indicators → predictive insights → maintenance recommendations would be valuable.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Embedded Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

* 4+ years of experience in automotive telematics, connected vehicles, automotive embedded systems, fleet telematics, or IoT.

* Hands-on experience integrating vehicle hardware and software systems.

* Strong understanding of automotive communication protocols, particularly CAN/CAN FD and OBD-II.

* Experience working with GPS/GNSS and cellular-connected devices.

* Experience collecting and interpreting vehicle telemetry and diagnostic data.

* Experience integrating telematics platforms using APIs and/or IoT messaging protocols.

* Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, firmware/software, connectivity, and cloud environments.

* Ability to work with OEMs, suppliers, telematics providers, engineering teams, and enterprise technology teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

* OEM connected-vehicle platforms

* Telematics Control Units (TCUs)

* Fleet-management systems

* Commercial vehicle telematics

* EV telematics and battery-health monitoring

* Remote diagnostics

* OTA/FOTA/SOTA systems

* Edge computing

* Automotive cybersecurity

* AWS IoT / Azure IoT / Google Cloud

* MQTT / Kafka / streaming data architectures

* Python, C/C++, Java or similar languages

* SQL and time-series/telemetry databases

* Data analytics and machine learning

* Predictive maintenance and anomaly detection

* Vehicle digital twins

Relevant Industry Experience

Candidates may come from environments such as:

Automotive OEMs | Tier-1 suppliers | Connected-vehicle platforms | Fleet-management companies | Telematics solution providers | Commercial vehicle manufacturers | Automotive IoT companies | Mobility technology companies

What Success Looks Like

The successful engineer should be comfortable working across the complete connected-vehicle technology chain:

Vehicle / ECU / Sensors → CAN & Vehicle Network → Telematics Device / TCU → GPS & Cellular Connectivity → IoT / Cloud Platform → Data & APIs → Analytics → Vehicle Health & Predictive Maintenance

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who understands not only how to capture vehicle data, but also how to reliably transport, integrate, analyze, and convert that data into meaningful operational and maintenance insights.
