Job Summary

The primary duty of the Telemetry Transporter is to transport patients throughout the medical complex in a safe, courteous, and timely manner. When appropriate and requested by clinical personnel, the Telemetry Transporter monitors patient vital signs—including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, lung sounds, VAD parameters, pulse oximetry, and ECG tracings—via appropriate monitoring equipment.

Additionally, the Telemetry Transporter continuously assesses the patient's overall condition and immediately notifies the nurse if any adverse conditions are detected. When necessary, the Transporter initiates Rapid Response and Code Calls for patients in declining status, responds to assigned clinical emergencies, and participates in the hospital emergency preparedness plan for internal and external emergency management. Duties also include assisting with patient transfers from bed to wheelchair or stretcher, carrying out minor patient care during transit, transporting deceased patients to the hospital morgue, and updating the transport tracking system using an assigned cell phone to ensure accurate transport location and time records.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Transport & Safety: Responds to all transport assignments safely and promptly. Maintains a constant focus on patient safety and well-being using proper techniques and equipment for efficient movement.
  • Patient Identification & Hand-Offs: Verifies patient identity following established hospital protocols. Ensures the "Ticket to Ride" is updated with date, time, and signatures from both the Transporter and RN. Receives and relays pertinent patient information to nursing/provider staff at the start, completion, and hand-off points of every transport, completing all required documentation.
  • Patient Handling & Equipment Preparation: Utilizes "Safe Patient Handling" techniques when transferring patients to wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and procedure tables, and assists staff with patient movement as needed. Secures patients and appropriate equipment prior to moving. Assures adequate oxygen tanks, IVs, drainage tubes, etc., are available prior to transport and upon arrival.
  • Telemetry & Vital Monitoring: Connects patients to appropriate monitoring devices prior to and upon completion of every telemetry transport. Informs patients of pending actions prior to attaching equipment (BP cuffs, monitor leads, pulse oximetry, etc.).
  • Clinical Safety & Escalation: Immediately alerts care providers, the Dispatcher, and Shift Supervisors/Managers/Directors to any signs of patient distress, equipment malfunction, or unsafe conditions.
  • Timekeeping & System Tracking: Clocks in and out of E*Star on time and promptly logs into the transport tracking system within the designated shift timeframe. Advises dispatchers of availability, acknowledges assignments, updates locations immediately upon arrival and exit, and completes assignments in real time.
  • Department & Safety Standards: Follows hospital protocols for isolation precautions, hand hygiene, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Utilizes downtime when not assigned to active transports to check and properly store department equipment. Maintains patient charts during transport and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Certifications: Maintains active EMT and CPR certifications and obtains a passing score on the annual dysrhythmia recertification exam.
