What they need

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and dependable Theatrical Carpenter / Set & Props Builder to join our production team on a contract basis. This position will be responsible for constructing, modifying, and preparing scenic elements, set pieces, and props for theatre productions.

The ideal candidate is a creative and detail-oriented builder who can take design plans, sketches, measurements, and creative direction and turn them into safe, functional, and visually engaging pieces for the stage. Experience working in theatre, live entertainment, events, or other scenic fabrication environments is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Build, assemble, modify, and repair theatrical sets, scenic elements, and props
  • Interpret scenic designs, sketches, measurements, reference images, and verbal direction
  • Construct platforms, walls, furniture, structures, specialty pieces, and other scenic elements as needed
  • Build and modify props and practical scenic pieces for productions
  • Select and work with appropriate materials, tools, hardware, and construction techniques
  • Ensure all set pieces and props are structurally sound and safe for performers and production staff
  • Assist with painting, finishing, distressing, or other scenic finishing work as needed
  • Make adjustments and repairs throughout the rehearsal and production process
  • Work within established production deadlines and communicate progress or potential challenges to the production team
  • Collaborate with directors, designers, production staff, and other builders to bring the creative vision to life
  • Maintain an organized and safe work area
  • Properly care for and maintain tools and equipment
  • Assist with load-in, installation, strike, and/or storage of scenic elements as needed
  • Work efficiently while maintaining attention to detail and quality

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in carpentry, scenic construction, theatrical production, fabrication, woodworking, or a related field
  • Ability to read and interpret basic drawings, plans, measurements, and construction instructions
  • Proficiency with common carpentry and shop tools
  • Strong understanding of basic construction and fabrication techniques
  • Ability to safely construct pieces intended for use in a live performance environment
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a production team
  • Reliable, organized, and able to meet deadlines
  • Ability to lift, move, and safely handle materials and completed scenic pieces
  • Flexible and comfortable working in a creative, fast-paced production environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience building theatrical scenery or props
  • Experience working with youth theatre, community theatre, educational theatre, or performing arts organizations
  • Experience with scenic painting and finishing
  • Experience working from theatrical scenic designs or production drawings
  • Familiarity with stage safety and theatrical production practices
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, hardware, rigging, or other theatrical construction applications is a plus

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys building things and solving creative problems. Theatre construction often requires finding practical solutions within a specific budget, space, timeline, and design concept, so flexibility and resourcefulness are highly valued.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their craftsmanship, communicates well with a creative team, and understands that safety and reliability are just as important as the finished product.

Position Details

  • Position: Contract / Freelance
  • Department: Production / Technical Theatre
  • Schedule: Flexible/project-based schedule determined by production needs

How to Apply

Please submit a resume or brief description of relevant experience. A portfolio, photos, or examples of previous set construction, carpentry, scenic fabrication, prop building, or related work are strongly encouraged.
