Thin Film Scientist

We are looking for someone to make a new generation of semiconductors that read biology. You will lead thin-film deposition, patterning, characterisation and foundry integration.

Who you are

You will hold a PhD in physics, materials science or electronic engineering. We are looking for someone who enjoys making things that have not been made before. You should feel comfortable in a small team where plans change as we learn, and be patient with a process that takes many runs to get right. You’ll be someone with humour when things don’t go as planned, the energy to start the next run, and who celebrates with the team when it works.

Where the role goes

Your first role is to build frontier chips in the labs and cleanrooms at the Royce at Imperial. You will then take the hand-built chips to full wafers and lead the technical engagement with foundries.

Essential (thin film device fabrication)

• Deposition: deposition of multilayers with sub-nanometre control by magnetron sputtering, thermal/e-beam evaporation, pulsed laser deposition (at least two methods)
• Patterning: photolithography through to patterned device, including multi-level alignment and mask layout; ion milling or ion beam etching with endpoint control
• Measurement: device-level electrical characterisation
• Characterisation: e.g. XRR, AFM, SEM, XPS

Desired skill set

• Experience in e-beam lithography
• Experience in working in a cleanroom environment
