What they need
Timashev Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Programming Languages & Software Engineering (PLSE) areas
The Ohio State University
Columbus, OH
Position Overview
This prestigious endowed position will be affiliated with the Center for Software Innovation (CSI) at The Ohio State University. This center, established by a generous $110M gift from the Timashev Family Foundation, is positioning The Ohio State University and the state of Ohio to be the epicenter for growth in the digital innovation ecosystem. It seeks to equip innovators with the skills, tools, and resources to build the digital economy and enable student education and access to the principles and practices of software innovation.
We seek candidates with expertise in the broad areas of software engineering, programming languages, compilers, and formal methods. The successful candidate will be able to leverage and complement existing PLSE expertise in the CSE Department, which conducts cutting-edge research on core PLSE topics together with multidisciplinary impact on systems, high-performance computing (HPC), privacy, security, and correctness. This expertise is provided by multiple faculty whose research is supported by NSF programs such as CAREER, SHF, CSR, PPoSS, CSSI, and SaTC. CSE’s PLSE faculty consistently serve on the committees of major PLSE conferences and journals. Several PLSE faculty members in the department collaborate with industry and government, including startups and large technology-intensive companies.
The successful candidate will be positioned to harness the Department’s world-class expertise in two of its core and traditional strengths, i.e., Systems and Artificial Intelligence, anchored by two NSF-funded AI institutes (ICICLE - Intelligent Cyberinfrastructure with Computational Learning in the Environment and AI-EDGE) and an NSF-funded Imageomics Institute, alongside other major research centers (such as the Institute for Cybersecurity and Digital Trust) with substantial funding. This rich ecosystem offers unparalleled opportunities for collaboration, innovation, translation, and leadership in cutting-edge research in large-scale software underpinned by AI, PL, and SE innovations. The candidate will have access to the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s advanced HPC and data infrastructure resources - an invaluable asset for future research at the intersection of PLSE, AI, and Systems. This position is also aligned with the University’s AI Fluency initiative, whereby each student will be fluent in AI as it applies to their field (https://oaa.osu.edu/ai-fluency) and with the AI(X) Hub initiative aiming at harnessing the transformative power of AI to solve complex challenges, accelerate discovery, and create meaningful societal impact (https://aihub.osu.edu).
Faculty members affiliated with CSI are expected to participate in a variety of scholarly activities that contribute to the CSI mission's overall success, including:
- Teaching and developing CSI-affiliated curriculum, including introductory programming languages, software design, engineering and development, capstone or project courses, and freshman experience courses that help students innovate and align with industry.
- Establishing and maintaining partnerships with industry, individuals, and focus groups to understand the skillset students need for a successful career in their field.
- Supporting the digital innovation ecosystem through engagement with local industry and startups.
