Tool Maker Position Overview We are seeking a skilled Tool Maker to design, build, maintain and repair precision production tooling, fixtures and prototype components. The ideal candidate will translate blueprints and CAD models into high-quality tools using manual and CNC machinery, while ensuring tight tolerances, consistent finishes and adherence to safety and quality standards. This role supports manufacturing throughput by producing reliable tooling and continuously improving processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and CAD models to plan tooling fabrication and assembly.
• Program, set up and operate CNC machines to manufacture precision components from various materials.
• Operate manual and CNC lathes, mills, grinders and EDM equipment to produce and finish tooling to specified tolerances.
• Perform bench work including tool assembly, fitting, grinding, and finishing of dies, molds, jigs and fixtures.
• Use precision measurement instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges, dial indicators) and CMMs to inspect parts and verify conformance to specifications.
• Troubleshoot and repair worn or damaged tooling, diagnose root causes and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
• Collaborate with engineers and production teams to refine designs for manufacturability, reduce cycle times and implement continuous improvement ideas.
• Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, tooling history, maintenance records and job setups.
• Manage tooling inventory, organize the tool room and ensure tools are labeled, stored and calibrated appropriately.
• Adhere to safety procedures, maintain a clean work area and participate in equipment maintenance and preventive programs.

Qualifications

• Associate degree, technical diploma or completion of an apprenticeship in toolmaking, precision machining or a related field; or equivalent hands-on experience (typically 3+ years).
• Proven experience in tool making and precision manufacturing, including working from blueprints and CAD models.
• Proficiency with CAD/CAM systems and the ability to interpret 2D drawings and 3D CAD files.
• Experience programming, setting up and operating CNC machines and controllers.
• Hands-on experience with manual and CNC lathes, mills, surface grinders and EDM machines.
• Strong skills using precision measuring instruments and inspecting parts to tight tolerances; familiarity with CMMs preferred.
• Solid understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment effects and machining feeds/ speeds for common tooling materials.
• Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot machining and tooling issues.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with engineers, technicians and production staff.
• Commitment to safety and quality practices; experience with ISO, Lean or continuous improvement programs is a plus.
• Valid ability to lift and handle moderate weights typical of a machine shop environment.
