Trades Assistant

Upspec Steel Buildings is a licensed builder based in Penrith, delivering rural, residential, commercial and government projects across Western Sydney. Over more than ten years we have completed in excess of 1500 buildings, we hold a 4.9 star rating on Google, and we build exclusively in Australian made BlueScope steel. We are a registered Buy NSW supplier and a principal builder for NSW Department of Education projects.

The business is growing and the construction crew is growing with it.

The role

You will work in a small crew taking a building from the slab through to completion. Portal frames, purlins, roof sheeting, wall cladding, guttering, flashings and roller doors. Site set out and footings one week, roof and cladding the next.

You will work at height on scissor lifts, use a wide range of power tools, and move between sites regularly. One project might be a rural shed on open acreage, the next an industrial building, the one after that a residential carport. Because Upspec carries out its own earthworks and operates its own crane truck, you work across the whole build rather than one stage of it.

All of our work is within about an hour of Penrith. No fly in fly out, and no accommodation away from home.

Hours and conditions

7:00am to 3:30pm. Paid fifteen minute morning break at 9:00am. Half hour lunch at midday. Home by four.

Pay is weekly, every Thursday.

The last Monday of every month is a paid rostered day off.

The business closes the last Friday before Christmas and reopens the Monday after New Year.

We pay for your tickets. Elevated work platform, forklift, and anything else the work requires. We would rather put the right person through their ticket than hold out for someone who already has it.

What we are looking for

A current White Card. This is a legal requirement for site access and is not negotiable.

A current driver licence and reliable transport to site.

Reliability. Our crews are small and everyone on them is counted on by the others.

A willingness to work outdoors in all conditions and take direction on an active construction site.

Experience in steel erection, an elevated work platform ticket or a forklift ticket will be reflected in your pay. If you hold none of them, apply anyway. We would rather train someone who wants the work.

Career progression

Upspec promotes from within. Skilled Assistant, Leading Hand, Supervisor, Construction Manager. Every one of those positions is currently filled from our own crew. When the next one opens, you are the first person considered.

Pay: $28.73 – $35.00 per hour
