We are looking for a Traffic Engineer with hands-on experience in SUMO – Simulation of Urban MObility to support an ongoing simulation project.

Role Overview

The Traffic Engineer will be responsible for building, configuring, running, and analysing traffic simulations using SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility).

The ideal candidate should have practical experience working with traffic networks, vehicle flows, routes, intersections, signal timing, and traffic simulation scenarios.

This is a hands-on technical role and requires actual working knowledge of SUMO, not just theoretical exposure to traffic engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and configure road networks and traffic scenarios in SUMO.
• Define vehicle routes, traffic flows, junctions, intersections, and traffic signals.
• Develop and modify SUMO network, route, and configuration files.
• Run traffic simulations for different traffic conditions and scenarios.
• Configure vehicle behaviour, traffic demand, congestion conditions, and signal timing.
• Import or work with road network data from OpenStreetMap or similar sources.
• Analyse simulation outputs including travel time, congestion, queue length, traffic flow, and vehicle movement.
• Validate simulation behaviour against project requirements or available traffic data.
• Modify and optimise simulation parameters based on project feedback.
• Support integration of SUMO with other applications or simulation environments where required.
• Maintain clear documentation of simulation assumptions, configurations, scenarios, and results.
• Coordinate with project, software, and engineering teams to ensure simulation outputs meet project objectives.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with SUMO – Simulation of Urban MObility.
• Understanding of traffic flow, road networks, intersections, vehicle routing, and signal systems.
• Experience creating and modifying SUMO networks and traffic scenarios.
• Familiarity with tools such as NETEDIT, NETCONVERT, DUAROUTER, or SUMO-GUI.
• Basic knowledge of Python will be preferred, particularly for automating SUMO simulations or using TraCI.
• Experience with OpenStreetMap, GIS, or traffic data will be an advantage.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

What We Are Looking For

We are specifically looking for candidates who have actually worked on SUMO-based traffic simulations.

Candidates should be comfortable independently creating a traffic simulation, configuring scenarios, troubleshooting simulation issues, and analysing the results.

Experience in transportation modelling, smart mobility, autonomous vehicle simulation, ITS, traffic optimisation, or urban mobility projects will be preferred.
