Who we are

Calder Stewart is a nationwide leader in developing property and building solutions for New Zealand’s industrial and commercial markets.

Every year our team of around 440 people deliver outcomes for local, national, and international clients by building many of the largest and most complex construction projects across the country. A family-owned business started in Milton in 1955, for 70 years we have successfully evolved our services into a national offering. Our capabilities include an extensive land portfolio, end-to-end property services, Design Build solutions, plus manufacturing and construction services.

With steady growth, the ability to communicate to our whole team has become a key focus to our business to ensure we continue to share our story with our people and our customers. We have generations of proven experience on our team, and we deliver flexible solutions and we're driven by a common set of values in 'Find a Way', 'Play Fair', 'Be Loyal' and 'Own It'.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Crane Operator to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to build a long-term career in the crane and construction industry, with full on-the-job training and support provided.

No previous crane operating experience is required. We will provide a structured training pathway to help you gain your NZQA Crane Operator qualifications and relevant industry certifications.

This is a hands-on role where you will work alongside experienced crane operators and site teams, learning how to safely set up, configure and operate cranes, while also gaining experience in rigging, dogman duties and general site support.

You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of construction and infrastructure projects across the regions. Once qualified, you will also need to be willing to work away from home when required.

Skills & Attributes

We are looking for someone who has the right attitude and a genuine willingness to learn. You will need to be able to think on your feet, stay focused in a fast-paced environment and always put safety first.

You will ideally have the following skills and attributes:

  • Highly motivated with a strong work ethic and a genuine eagerness to learn
  • A proactive, 'can-do' attitude and ability to work well under pressure
  • Strong commitment to health and safety
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Physically fit and comfortable working at heights
  • A current and clean NZ Class 2 Driver Licence is preferred
  • Class 4 or Class 5 licence would be advantageous, but is not essential
  • Willingness to obtain or upgrade heavy vehicle licences as required
  • Willingness to undertake and successfully complete the required training and qualifications
  • Willingness to work away from home when required once qualified
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test

Culture & Benefits

In return for your commitment and willingness to learn, we can offer you a structured training pathway, competitive remuneration, overtime opportunities and the opportunity to build a long-term career within the crane and construction industry.

You will be supported by an experienced team and gain hands-on experience across a range of exciting construction and infrastructure projects.

If you're looking for a career where you can develop valuable skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications and work as part of a great team, we'd love to hear from you.
