What they need

Horizon Services Limited is a nationally recognised electricity infrastructure services company.  Our team of highly skilled designers, engineers, and field service technicians deliver innovative and reliable solutions. These include the design and maintenance of underground and overhead electricity infrastructure, streetlighting, capital works and maintenance, asset management, and future energy and sustainability solutions. Horizon Services is proud to be a member of the Horizon Energy Group of companies.

About the role:

As a Trainee Line Mechanic, you'll join our Palmerston North team and begin a structured pathway towards becoming a qualified Line Mechanic. We are currently recruiting for 2 positions. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll gain practical experience across overhead and underground electricity network infrastructure while completing industry-recognised training.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, learning technical skills, and building a long-term career in the electricity industry.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting qualified Line Mechanics with construction, maintenance and fault response work
  • Supporting the installation, repair and replacement of overhead lines, underground cables and associated equipment
  • Participating in a structured training programme leading towards a Level 4 Line Mechanic qualification
  • Learning industry regulations, electrical infrastructure practices and safe work procedures
  • Completing job documentation and maintaining accurate records
  • Working collaboratively with the wider field services team to deliver high-quality customer outcomes
  • Following all health, safety and environmental requirements at all times

Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.

About you:

We're looking for someone with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and a genuine interest in developing a career within the electricity industry.

To be successful, you'll bring:

  • NCEA achievement in Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • A current unrestricted manual New Zealand driver's licence
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A commitment to working safely and following procedures
  • Physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions
  • The ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
  • A motivated, reliable and self-driven approach to learning
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to complete documentation accurately
  • A customer-focused attitude and willingness to support the wider team

Previous experience in a trade, construction, utilities, or related environment would be advantageous, but is not essential, as full training and support will be provided.

What's in it for you?

At Horizon Energy Group, you'll enjoy:

  • Career development: ongoing training, upskilling and pathways across the wider Group
  • Wellbeing support: health checks, flu jabs, EAP, and life & critical illness insurance
  • Extra leave: enjoy a paid day off on your birthday
  • Perks & discounts: access to a wide range of corporate discounts
  • Join a trusted NZ company with 70+ years of industry experience
  • Supportive team culture: work with people who value safety, teamwork and doing the job right
