Transcriber

Description This is an hourly position on an as-needed basis. The position provides speech-to-text services in classrooms to ensure equal access to programs and activities. 36-60 hours of training, paid for by Student Disability Services, is required for this position.

Responsibilities Transcribers complete a Basic Skills Course that is online and paid for by Student Disability Services. Once trained, newly trained transcribers are paired with an experienced transcriber who will support them in gaining experience and comfort working as a transcriber. Transcribers provide meaning-for-meaning services in classrooms, lectures on campus, professor/student meetings, conferences, special events, and other places where dialog might occur. As they transcribe, the text is streamed wirelessly to the reader so they can see the information and participate in the discussion.

Required Skills

• Good listening and memory skills.
• Excellent English skills.
• Typing speed of at least 60 words per minute, with no errors, and
• No history of pain in the arms or wrist that might suggest a repetitive motion disorder.
