About McRae's

McRae's U.S. Mail Service, Inc. is a family-owned transportation company that has proudly served the United States Postal Service since 1987. With approximately 325 employees, a fleet of more than 165 trucks, and operations throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota, we've built our reputation on dependable service, strong relationships, and a hardworking team.

Position Overview

We're looking for an experienced Operations Manager to lead our daily mail transportation operations.

This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for overseeing our dispatch team, supporting and managing drivers, maintaining service performance, and keeping daily operations running efficiently.

Transportation is an industry where no two days are quite the same. We're looking for someone who can think on their feet, make confident decisions, communicate effectively, and lead a team through both routine operations and unexpected challenges.

The right person will be organized, approachable, accountable, and comfortable managing the moving pieces of a fast-paced transportation operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily USPS transportation operations, ensuring routes are properly staffed, scheduled, and completed.
  • Directly supervise dispatch personnel and drivers, providing leadership, guidance, coaching, and accountability.
  • Monitor on-time performance, service reliability, and overall operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate coverage for driver absences, equipment breakdowns, service disruptions, and unexpected operational changes.
  • Maintain effective communication with USPS personnel regarding scheduling, service concerns, and operational needs.
  • Monitor driver scheduling, Hours of Service, and equipment utilization to maintain efficient and compliant operations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce unnecessary costs, and strengthen operational performance.
  • Assist with employee performance management, training, and development.
  • Support planning and execution of peak season operations, schedule adjustments, and new contract implementations.
  • Foster a positive, professional work environment while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.
  • Provide occasional after-hours support when operational issues require management attention.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation, trucking, logistics, or fleet operations.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience, preferably overseeing drivers and dispatch personnel.
  • Strong understanding of transportation scheduling, dispatch operations, and driver management.
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations and Hours of Service requirements.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable using transportation management systems, Microsoft Office, and other operational technology.
  • Ability to lead employees effectively, address performance concerns, and hold team members accountable.

Preferred:

  • Experience with USPS transportation contracts or dedicated route operations.
  • Experience managing operations across multiple locations.
  • Familiarity with transportation performance metrics and operational cost management.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary of $85,000–$105,000, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance and short-term disability coverage
  • Additional voluntary insurance benefits
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Stable, established company with opportunities for professional growth
