Transportation Operations Technician II - Temporary

Overview The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is hiring seasonal Transportation Operations Technicians to support highway maintenance and winter operations in New Haven.

This hands-on role involves a variety of tasks that keep Vermont's roads safe and reliable, including repairing guardrails, patching pavement, ditching, clearing brush, and picking up litter. Seasonal staff also play a critical role in plowing and salting during winter weather events. Overtime may be required.

Who May Apply This position, Transportation Operations Technician II - Temporary (Job Requisition #55725) , is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors Duties require the ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule/ area and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and debris from roadside litter are present. May be exposed to blood or airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on roads with moving traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor INCLUDING EITHER one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.

OR

Upon successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.

Special Requirements A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.

An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.

Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.

An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
