Overview

We are partnered with a nationally established commercial general contractor specializing in ground-up retail, big-box developments, grocery stores, commercial renovations, and multi-site construction programs. The company delivers projects across the country for major national clients, with an emphasis on fast-paced schedules, repeat business, and consistent project execution.

The Traveling Project Engineer will support both field operations and project management teams throughout the construction lifecycle, assisting with subcontractor coordination, scheduling, quality control, documentation, and project closeout. This is an opportunity for an early-career construction professional to gain hands-on experience across multiple markets while developing toward an Assistant Project Manager or Superintendent position.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Support Project Managers and Superintendents with daily coordination and execution of commercial construction projects.
  • Assist with subcontractor scheduling, trade coordination, material deliveries, and jobsite logistics.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, drawing revisions, and project documentation to keep construction activities moving.
  • Review construction drawings and specifications to identify scope conflicts, coordination issues, and potential field challenges.
  • Conduct regular jobsite walks to monitor progress, workmanship, safety compliance, and quality control.
  • Assist with short-interval schedules, look-ahead planning, and tracking construction milestones.
  • Coordinate inspections, punch lists, and corrective work with subcontractors and field leadership.
  • Track procurement activities, long-lead materials, and equipment deliveries against project schedules.
  • Support change order documentation, quantity verification, and subcontractor billing reviews.
  • Maintain daily reports, progress photographs, meeting minutes, and project records using construction management software.
  • Assist with project turnover, closeout documentation, warranties, and final inspections.
  • Travel nationally to assigned projects and remain onsite throughout the required construction phases.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 1-4 years of experience in commercial construction as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, or similar role.
  • Experience working for a general contractor on commercial construction projects.
  • Ability to read construction drawings, understand subcontractor scopes, and coordinate field activities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally for project assignments.
  • Experience with ground-up retail, grocery, big-box, or commercial renovation projects.
  • Familiarity with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, or similar construction management platforms.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
