What they need

This position is based within Te Awhi, a unique kaupapa Māori organisation that provides mental health and addictions support. We are dedicated to nurturing recovery, resilience and wellbeing in ways that are grounded in whakapapa, aroha, and manaakitanga. Awhi Whānau is our community based residential and supportive housing services, where we support Tū Whānau to live safely and build connections and confidence.

As Tū Arahi, you will provide high-quality leadership and management to a small team of Tū Awhina who support Tū Whānau. You will have a strong commitment to whānau wellbeing and work collaboratively with others. The role is about building trust, leading with aroha, and showing manaakitanga in the everyday actions that help whānau and team members feel safe, respected, and supported.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of Tū Awhina to provide high-quality, culturally responsive support for whānau, manuhiri and stakeholders.
  • Support Tū Whānau aspirations and nurture hauora in line with kaupapa Māori philosophy and the Awhi Taea approach to care.
  • Develop rosters, participate in on call and in health and safety responses.
  • Work collaboratively and constructively as part of the leadership team.

The role prioritises constructive leadership, a holistic approach and empowering Tū Awhina to support Tū Whānau to participate in their own wellbeing journey. The successful applicant will be well supported and be part of a group of experienced team leaders who are committed to making a difference.

About you

  • Three years+ experience in mental health care, including Level 4 or equivalent.

  • A positive and calm communicator who can build trust, listen well, connect meaningfully and lead others.

  • Team leadership or coaching experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a kaupapa Māori context, or a commitment to working in such environments.

  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in mental health support.

  • Competency in Te Reo Māori or a commitment to developing language skills.

Personal Attributes

  • Positive and personally resilient.

  • Passionate about leading a team to provide culturally responsive, clinically supported care, and supporting Tu Whānau towards holistic wellbeing.

  • Respectful, inclusive, and committed to equity in health outcomes.

  • Reliable, accountable, and proactive.

  • Humble, reflective, with a grounded approach to learning, growth, and teamwork.

  • A full licence, as you may be required to drive Te Awhi vehicles.
