An opportunity to take the lead
Are you an experienced Engineering Manager, Service Manager or Senior Engineer ready to take the next step in your career?
This is an opportunity to join an established specialist in industrial shredding and recycling machinery, leading an engineering team responsible for customer projects, installations, commissioning and technical support across the UK.
The role offers a varied working week, combining time at the company's head office, home-based planning and project work, and visits to customer sites. You'll have the autonomy to manage your workload, develop your team and make a real impact on engineering performance, customer satisfaction and the wider business.
You'll be joining a specialist machinery business where engineering expertise matters, with the opportunity to take ownership of projects from initial planning through to installation, commissioning and customer handover.
What's in it for you?
- Strong salary and benefits package , reflecting the responsibility and experience required.
- Private healthcare as part of the benefits offering.
- Hybrid working , split between the head office, home-based work and customer site visits.
- A varied leadership position combining technical engineering, project delivery, customer engagement and commercial responsibility.
- The opportunity to lead and develop an established engineering team.
- Exposure to specialist industrial machinery, complex installations and customer projects.
- A role with genuine ownership over service delivery, project performance, resource planning and continuous improvement.
- The chance to work closely with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and an international manufacturing partner.
The role
You'll lead the engineering function, ensuring customer projects and engineering services are delivered safely, efficiently and profitably. You'll balance team leadership with hands-on involvement in technical challenges, project planning and customer relationships.
Engineering and service delivery
- Lead the engineering team and coordinate engineers, subcontractors, equipment and resources.
- Oversee technical support, maintenance activities, inspections and customer engineering issues.
- Support customers with machinery operation, maintenance and technical queries.
- Coordinate engineering resources for installations, commissioning and service work.
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex technical or customer issues.
Project management and commissioning
- Manage projects from initial handover through installation, commissioning and customer acceptance.
- Coordinate schedules, milestones, labour, suppliers and customer requirements.
- Monitor project progress, manage risks and resolve delivery issues.
- Ensure appropriate RAMS, technical documentation, work instructions and handover records are in place.
- Identify opportunities to improve project delivery and reduce repeat issues.
Commercial and operational performance
- Monitor project costs, work in progress, resource utilisation and profitability.
- Manage engineering time, travel, accommodation, materials, equipment hire and subcontractor costs.
- Track performance against delivery, quality, customer satisfaction and financial targets.
- Maintain accurate reporting and project records using business systems.
Team leadership
- Coach, support and develop engineers, helping the team perform at its best.
- Plan workloads and capacity, allocate resources and identify training needs.
- Build strong working relationships across the business and with external partners.
- Promote safe working practices, quality standards and a culture of continuous improvement.
What we're looking for
You'll be an experienced engineering professional who can combine sound technical knowledge with the ability to lead people, manage projects and deliver a strong customer experience.
You may already be working as an Engineering Manager, Engineering Supervisor, Service Manager, Installation Manager or Senior Service Engineer looking for a broader leadership opportunity.
You'll ideally bring:
- A strong mechanical and electrical engineering background, with experience working on complex industrial machinery.
- Mechanical knowledge covering components such as gearboxes, bearings and hydraulic systems.
- Electrical knowledge covering drives, safety circuits, PLCs and different voltage systems.
- The ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings and technical manuals.
- Experience leading engineers and coordinating field-based or workshop-based activities.
- Strong planning, scheduling and project management skills.
- An understanding of project costs, resource utilisation, margins and commercial performance.
- Experience managing contractors, suppliers, RAMS, commissioning and customer handovers.
- Confident communication skills and the ability to build relationships with customers at different levels.
- A full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel to customer sites when required.
Experience with industrial shredding, recycling, waste processing, crushing and screening, bulk handling or other capital equipment would be particularly relevant. Familiarity with ERP or CRM systems, bills of materials and engineering change control would also be beneficial.
Working arrangements
This is a hybrid position with a practical balance between office-based leadership and planning, home-based project and administrative work, and customer site visits for installations, commissioning and technical support.
You'll need to be comfortable travelling across the UK and occasionally staying away overnight when projects or customer requirements demand it.
