What You'll Do

• Lead and develop the Underwriting team: set priorities, distribute workload, coach underwriters, review their work and support hiring and onboarding of new team members.
• Own the end-to-end merchant underwriting process - onboarding, due diligence, risk assessment, approval and activation - and take the final decision on complex and high-risk cases.
• Define, document and continuously improve underwriting procedures, risk appetite criteria and SLAs, aligned with business growth and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee ongoing merchant monitoring and periodic reviews, managing fraud, chargeback and credit risk across the merchant portfolio.
• Ensure underwriting activities comply with card scheme rules (Visa, Mastercard), PCI DSS, PSD2 and AML/KYC requirements.
• Use portfolio data and insights to refine risk policies, merchant screening and monitoring rules, and report key underwriting KPIs to the direct manager.
• Partner with Compliance, Sales, Legal and Product teams on new verticals and markets, audits, scheme reviews and regulatory inspections.
• Act as the escalation point for internal teams on underwriting and merchant risk matters.

What You'll Bring

• 3+ years of experience in Merchant Acquiring underwriting, merchant risk or KYB, including at least 1- 2 years leading a team or acting as a lead/senior underwriter.
• Deep knowledge of card schemes (e.g., Visa, Mastercard), their risk and monitoring programmes, alternative payment methods and higher-risk merchant categories.
• Solid understanding of regulatory standards such as PCI DSS, PSD2, AML/KYC, and of risk and compliance in regulated environments.
• Proven ability to assess complex merchant business models, financials and transaction risk, and to take well-reasoned, documented decisions.
• People leadership skills - you coach, give clear feedback and build an accountable, high-performing team.
• Process mindset - experience building or improving underwriting workflows, policies and SLAs.
• Analytical and adaptable, with a customer-focused and entrepreneurial mindset driven by innovation in digital payments.
• Have professional English language skills (any additional foreign language is an advantage).
• Proficiency in Excel, Google Sheets, AML/onboarding software.
• Advantage - Tableau, Zoho, Asana, Notion.
• Detail oriented.
• Be able to cope with a very dynamic environment and rapid changes.
• Be prepared to be self-sustainable at times and ready to show initiative.
