Unit Head

The Unit Head of Microbiology is responsible for the overall management, supervision, and quality assurance of the Microbiology section within the clinical laboratory. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant diagnostic testing while maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practice, biosafety, and regulatory compliance. The Unit Head provides technical leadership, staff supervision, and operational oversight to support patient care and institutional goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Oversee daily operations of the Microbiology unit, including bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, and related testing services. Ensure timely, accurate, and reliable reporting of laboratory results.

• Optimize workflow, staffing, and resource utilization to meet service demands.

• Ensure adherence to established SOPs, quality control, and quality assurance programs. Review, validate, and troubleshoot microbiological test results and procedures

• Implement and monitor internal quality controls, proficiency testing, and corrective actions. Stay updated on advancements in microbiological diagnostics and recommend improvements.

• Ensure compliance with DOH, ISO, CAP, JCI, or other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. Maintain documentation required for audits, inspections, and certifications.

• Enforce biosafety, infection control, and waste management protocols.

• Supervise, train, and evaluate microbiology laboratory personnel. Provide technical guidance, coaching, and performance feedback. Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and competency assessments

• Oversee proper use, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment. Manage inventory of reagents, media, and supplies; ensure availability and cost-efficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Licensed Medical Technologist (where applicable).
• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or leadership role
• Amenable to work in San Juan, Metro Manila.
