What they need
About CEE
The Centre for Energy Equality develops software and energy solutions that help people access sustainable, secure and affordable energy. We combine software development, data science and energy expertise to deliver projects with practical social and environmental benefits.
About the role
We are looking for an experienced Unity developer to support the Fairer Warmth schools project, working with CEE and EWB to create engaging interactive learning experiences.
You will help translate energy and sustainability concepts into accessible gameplay that encourages pupils to explore choices, understand their consequences and learn through participation.
We need someone who can contribute quickly, take ownership of development tasks and turn prototypes into reliable software suitable for use in schools. The role combines hands-on Unity development, gameplay design, testing and collaboration with project partners.
What you will do
- Develop and improve educational games and interactive experiences using Unity and C#.
- Translate learning objectives into clear gameplay mechanics, challenges and feedback.
- Build intuitive interfaces, tutorials and interactions appropriate for the intended pupil age groups.
- Extend and refactor existing code, creating maintainable systems and reusable components.
- Implement game logic, progression, scenario behaviour and visual feedback.
- Integrate artwork, animation, sound and other assets into the experience.
- Optimise performance, loading times and builds for the agreed school devices and delivery platform.
- Test functionality, resolve defects and support reliable releases.
- Work with CEE, EWB and education stakeholders to gather feedback and improve the experience.
- Document technical decisions and provide clear handovers to the wider team.
Essential experience
- Commercial Unity and C# development experience, with a portfolio of released games or deployed interactive applications.
- Experience taking a project through development, testing, release and subsequent maintenance.
- Strong understanding of gameplay programming, UI development and Unity’s component-based architecture.
- Ability to understand an existing codebase and make improvements independently.
- Experience debugging and profiling Unity applications, including performance and memory optimisation.
- Good software engineering practices, including version control, code review, appropriate automated testing and technical documentation.
- An understanding of how to make interactions clear, engaging and accessible.
- Confidence working with non-technical stakeholders and translating feedback into practical changes.
We are particularly interested in what you have personally built, shipped and supported.
Desirable experience
- Educational games, serious games, simulations or interactive learning tools.
- Unity WebGL builds and browser-based delivery.
- Developing for devices with limited processing power or unreliable connectivity.
- Accessible game design and testing with children or education users.
- Backend integration, REST APIs, Firebase or cloud services.
- Save systems, progress tracking and privacy-conscious analytics.
- Automated build and release workflows.
- Experience working with artists, designers or educators.
- Interest in energy, sustainability and social impact.
What success looks like
You will help deliver an experience that pupils find engaging, teachers can use confidently and the project team can maintain and extend. Features should support clear learning objectives, work reliably on the agreed devices and be supported by readable code, testing and documentation.
How to apply
Please send your CV and portfolio to [email protected].
Include one or two examples of Unity projects, explaining:
- Your personal contribution.
- The platforms they were released on.
- A technical challenge you solved.
- How you tested and supported the finished experience.
We welcome relevant experience from commercial games, educational software, simulations and other interactive applications.
