What they need
A U.S. Customs Broker is a licensed professional who helps importers and exporters comply with federal regulations, ensuring smooth and legal movement of goods across U.S. borders.
Role and Purpose
U.S. Customs Brokers act as intermediaries between importers/exporters and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Their primary role is to ensure that shipments entering or leaving the United States comply with all applicable laws, including tariff classifications, valuation, duty payments, and documentation requirements
They help businesses navigate complex import/export regulations, reducing the risk of fines, delays, or seizure of goods
Key Responsibilities
Documentation and Declarations: Brokers prepare and submit necessary paperwork such as entry summaries, Importer Security Filings (ISF), invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading to CBP and other partner agencies
Classification and Valuation: They determine the correct Harmonized System (HS) codes for products, calculate duties, and ensure proper valuation to prevent overpayment or penalties
Payment of Duties and Taxes: Customs brokers handle the payment of duties, tariffs, and other fees on behalf of their clients, including managing refunds or penalties if necessary
Regulatory Compliance: Brokers advise clients on changing regulations, trade agreements, and agency requirements, ensuring ongoing compliance with federal laws
Problem Resolution: They manage customs exam holds, respond to audits, and resolve issues that may arise during the import/export process
Risk Management and Cost Savings: Brokers identify opportunities for duty drawbacks, free trade eligibility, and special tariff programs, helping clients save money and avoid legal risks
Recordkeeping: Maintaining accurate transaction documents, financial records, and powers of attorney is essential for audits and legal compliance
Pay: From $12.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 40.0 per week
Work Location: In person
