User Interface Designer

• Initial contract of up to 12 months with extensions of up to 24 months.
• Based in Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide or Hobart.
• Requires active Baseline security clearance.

What We Are Looking For Ressam is currently looking to fill a User Interface Designer role for a Federal Government department. Please apply if the following role interests you.

User Interface Designer The User Interface Designer will guide the research, selection, design and implementation of user interfaces to deliver seamless, accessible and engaging digital experiences.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of user experience (UX) disciplines, interaction design, inclusive digital design principles and industry best practices, with at least two years of demonstrated experience in UI design.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

• Apply user-centred design methodologies and UX techniques to create simple, effective and accessible digital solutions that meet government standards and guidelines.
• Develop and continuously improve the quality and consistency of digital products, design patterns and processes.
• Provide technical advice on usability principles, accessibility and interface design.
• Analyse complex user needs and business requirements to design, evaluate and refine user interface solutions.
• Create and maintain UI design assets, frameworks, standards and governance documentation.
• Develop rapid and iterative prototypes using relevant design and prototyping tools.
• Transform static design assets into dynamic and interactive front-end code.
• Establish and maintain UI component libraries and design systems, including components, design tokens, guidelines and documentation.
• Facilitate workshops and collaborate with stakeholders to support service design and continuous improvement.
• Plan, conduct and report on user research and usability testing to validate design decisions and inform improvements.

Technical Skills and Experience

• Minimum two years of demonstrated experience in User Interface design.
• Strong understanding of UX principles, interaction design and accessible digital design practices.
• Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and related front-end frameworks and libraries.
• Knowledge of web accessibility standards (a11y) and inclusive design principles.
• Understanding of JavaScript event handling, the event loop and browser rendering processes.
• Familiarity with web security and privacy controls, including CSRF, CORS and CSP.
• Understanding of web fundamentals, including DNS, HTTP, server-side rendering (SSR), content delivery networks (CDNs) and Edge computing.
• Experience developing and maintaining design systems, UI component libraries and interactive prototypes.
• Strong stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation and communication skills.

Work Arrangements The successful candidate will be expected to work onsite for the first six weeks. Following this period, hybrid working arrangements may be considered, subject to business requirements and approval.

Candidates must reside within reasonable travelling distance of their nominated office location to attend onsite when required.
