What they need

About the role

Balfour Beatty is delivering major works on the Lower Thames Crossing, a nationally significant project that will improve connectivity, support economic growth and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

We're looking for a Design Coordinator (Utilities) to support the successful coordination and delivery of utilities design activities across this landmark scheme. Working alongside the Utilities Design Manager and wider project team, you'll play a key role in ensuring utilities designs are fully integrated, compliant, buildable and delivered in line with programme requirements.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an engineer or design professional looking to develop their design management career on one of the UK's largest and most complex infrastructure projects.

What you'll be doing

As Design Coordinator (Utilities), you'll support the management and coordination of both contestable and non-contestable utility designs, ensuring they are effectively integrated with the wider project design and construction activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Utilities Design Manager in coordinating utilities detailed design delivery across the project.
  • Preparing and coordinating technical design documentation, including Approval in Principle (AIP) submissions, Interface Control Documents and Utility Asset Schedules.
  • Managing the timely production, review and submission of utilities drawings, models and design deliverables.
  • Coordinating design inputs and outputs with construction, temporary works and other engineering disciplines.
  • Working closely with designers, Statutory Undertakers, subcontractors and project stakeholders to resolve design interfaces and technical issues.
  • Maintaining design management records, technical queries, RFIs, design actions and assumptions.
  • Supporting design assurance activities to ensure compliance with project requirements, technical standards and governance processes.
  • Assisting with the management of design change, early warnings, compensation events and field change requests.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary design reviews and clash detection workshops.
  • Supporting the identification and mitigation of design risks throughout project delivery.
  • Helping drive innovation, buildability, value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.

Who we're looking for

We're keen to hear from candidates with utilities, civil engineering, infrastructure or major project experience who are looking to develop their career within design management.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience working within a design coordination, engineering, design management or project engineering role.
  • An understanding of utilities infrastructure, including diversion, protection or installation works.
  • Experience coordinating technical information across multiple stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of design management processes and project delivery within construction or infrastructure environments.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple design activities simultaneously.
  • Experience working with drawings, models and common data environments (CDEs).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience on major infrastructure, highways, rail, energy or utilities projects would be advantageous.
