GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this classification is to perform maintenance work on the water systems for an assigned department of the City. Employees in this classification perform duties that provide the City and the public with safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient areas in which to work, conduct business and/or enjoy leisure and recreation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, environmental conditions, or qualifications required of employees assigned to this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Performs skilled maintenance work on the water systems.

2. Operates various tools and maintenance equipment as required in performance of job functions.

3. Performs manual excavation duties including digging, cutting, trenching, etc.

4. Ensures safe operating conditions on each work site, i.e. setting barricades, cones and signs. Monitors and directs traffic.

5. Uses a variety of handheld tools and equipment applicable to assigned work area, i.e. hand tools, shovels, saws, drills, and pipe cutters.

6. Observes safe and proper operating procedures when operating trucks, equipment, machinery, and/or tools, in accordance with established policies and procedures.

7. Operates heavy equipment skillfully and safely as needed, including forklifts, tractors, excavators, aerial lift truck and dump trucks.

8. Performs traffic control activities as required.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalency diploma. One (1) year of experience with maintenance work on water systems preferred. Ability to operate heavy machinery preferred. A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record required. Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class “A Modified”, with tanker endorsement, preferred. CPR/AED certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Performance Aptitudes:

• Skill in the operation of hand tools, equipment, and general maintenance practices and methods.
• Ability to operate heavy machinery.
• Good physical condition and ability and willingness to perform required manual tasks.
• Must be able to compile, assemble, copy, record, and/or transcribe data and/or information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.
• Provides guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
• Ability to safely operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
• Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information.
• Ability to work in team environment and communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties.

Essential Physical Skills:

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, and involving stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.

Work Environment:

Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as various weather conditions, dust, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, bright/dim light, traffic hazards, and/or toxic/poisonous agents. May be required to work during Tropical storms/Hurricanes or during a State of Emergency.
