Role Overview

R&M Williams Ltd is seeking an experienced and reliable Light Commercial Vehicle Mechanic to be responsible for the maintenance, servicing, diagnostics and repair of our company vehicle fleet.

The role will primarily involve working on light commercial vehicles, including vans and associated fleet vehicles used across our construction and maintenance operations.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake both planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs, helping to ensure that vehicles remain safe, reliable and available for operational use. The role will include the use of modern diagnostic equipment to identify faults and undertake appropriate repairs.

Key Responsibilities

The Mechanic will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out routine servicing, maintenance and mechanical repairs on light commercial vehicles.
  • Diagnosing mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Investigating vehicle warning lights, fault codes and reported defects.
  • Carrying out repairs to engines, braking systems, suspension, steering, clutches, gearboxes and associated vehicle components.
  • Undertaking routine inspection and maintenance of vehicle batteries, charging systems and electrical components.
  • Identifying worn or defective components and arranging or recommending replacement as required.
  • Preparing vehicles for MOT and arranging or undertaking any necessary remedial works following inspection.
  • Responding to vehicle breakdowns and urgent repair requirements where necessary.
  • Undertaking preventative maintenance to minimise vehicle downtime and avoid unnecessary breakdowns.
  • Maintaining accurate servicing and repair records for each vehicle.
  • Recording diagnostic findings, parts used and work completed.
  • Monitoring upcoming servicing, MOT and maintenance requirements across the fleet.
  • Liaising with vehicle users and operational managers regarding vehicle defects and repair requirements.
  • Liaising with parts suppliers, dealerships and specialist repair providers where external support is required.
  • Ordering or identifying appropriate replacement parts and consumables.
  • Ensuring vehicles are maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and appropriate safety standards.
  • Advising management where vehicles require significant expenditure or where replacement may be more economical than repair.
  • Maintaining the workshop, tools and diagnostic equipment in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.
  • Carrying out basic vehicle inspections and reporting any safety concerns immediately.
  • Supporting effective management of vehicle downtime and prioritising repairs according to operational requirements.
  • Ensuring all work is undertaken safely and in accordance with company health and safety procedures.

Diagnostics

A key part of the role will be fault diagnosis.

The company provides suitable vehicle diagnostic equipment and software, and the successful candidate will be expected to confidently use diagnostic systems to:

  • Read and interpret fault codes.
  • Diagnose engine management faults.
  • Diagnose ABS and braking system faults.
  • Identify electrical and sensor faults.
  • Investigate warning lights and intermittent faults.
  • Carry out diagnostic testing following repairs.
  • Reset service indicators and fault codes where appropriate.

Experience and Qualifications

The successful candidate should ideally have:

  • Previous experience working as a Vehicle Mechanic, Vehicle Technician or Light Commercial Vehicle Technician.
  • Strong practical experience maintaining and repairing vans and light commercial vehicles.
  • Good mechanical and electrical diagnostic ability.
  • Experience using vehicle diagnostic equipment.
  • A sound understanding of modern diesel and petrol vehicles.
  • Experience with braking, suspension, steering, clutch and drivetrain repairs.
  • The ability to diagnose faults independently and determine an appropriate repair.
  • A good understanding of vehicle servicing and preventative maintenance requirements.
  • A full UK driving licence.

An NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, City & Guilds qualification or equivalent would be advantageous, although suitable practical experience will also be considered.

Personal Attributes

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable and well organised.
  • Able to work independently and manage their own workload.
  • Methodical when investigating faults.
  • Practical and solutions-focused.
  • Conscious of vehicle and driver safety.
  • Able to prioritise urgent repairs effectively.
  • Comfortable communicating with drivers, managers, suppliers and dealerships.
  • Able to maintain clear records of servicing and repair work.
  • Committed to maintaining vehicles to a high standard.

Purpose of the Role

The overall purpose of the position is to provide R&M Williams with an effective in-house vehicle maintenance and repair capability, reducing vehicle downtime and external repair costs while ensuring the company's fleet remains safe, compliant and operational.

The Mechanic will play an important part in keeping operational teams mobile and ensuring vehicles are maintained proactively rather than relying solely on reactive repairs.
