What they need
We are seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Ventilation Systems Service Technician to join our Indoor Air Quality team. In this role, you will be responsible for inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, and troubleshooting residential and light commercial ventilation equipment. Your primary focus will center on full-system air duct cleaning, heat recovery ventilator (HRV) and energy recovery ventilator (ERV) core servicing, and exhaust system maintenance (including bathroom fans and dryer vents).
The ideal candidate takes pride in improving indoor air quality, enjoys working directly with customers, and excels at performing thorough, meticulous field service work.
Key Responsibilities
Duct Cleaning & Air Distribution Systems
- Perform thorough mechanical cleaning of residential and commercial supply and return ductwork using rotary brushes, air whips, compressed air nozzles, and high-powered negative pressure vacuum systems.
- Inspect ductwork visually and with inspection cameras to identify mold, dust build-up, pest intrusion, or physical damage.
- Seal access openings and install service ports in duct systems according to NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) standards.
- Sanitize and deodorize ductwork systems using approved EPA-registered antimicrobial agents when required.
- Clean registers, diffusers, grilles, and furnace/handler plenum boxes.
Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) & ERV Maintenance
- Perform complete diagnostic checks and seasonal cleaning on Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV).
- Remove, inspect, wash, and reinstall HRV cores, condensate drain lines, and air filters (pre-filters and high-efficiency filters).
- Inspect, clean, and lubricate exterior intake and exhaust hoods; ensure dampers open and close properly and rodent/pest screens are clear.
- Verify proper air balancing (supply vs. exhaust CFM) and adjust core settings or damper controls for optimal efficiency.
- Test wall controls, humidistats, and operational modes (High Speed, Low Speed, Intermittent, Recirculation).
Bathroom Exhaust Fans & Local Ventilation
- Disassemble, deep clean, and service residential bathroom exhaust fans and kitchen local ventilation units.
- Remove accumulated lint, dust, and humidity residue from fan housings, blower wheels (impellers), and motors.
- Inspect, clean, and repair duct runs connecting bathroom fans to exterior wall or roof caps.
- Inspect and replace damaged backdraft dampers to prevent cold air infiltration into the home.
- Test electrical connections, motor function, noise levels (sone ratings), and moisture-sensing controls.
General Service & Customer Relations
- Perform dryer vent inspection, lint removal, and duct repair/replacement to prevent fire hazards.
- Educate homeowners on proper maintenance schedules, filter replacement routines, and humidity management.
- Provide transparent reports, digital photos (before/after), and recommendations for equipment upgrades or repairs.
- Maintain a clean, organized service vehicle and ensure all vacuum systems, air compressors, and hand tools are inspected and serviced regularly.
- Adhere strictly to company safety protocols, OSHA standards, and fall-protection guidelines when working on ladders or roofs.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience in HVAC maintenance, duct cleaning, indoor air quality (IAQ) service, or building maintenance.
- Certifications (Preferred):
- NADCA ASCS (Air Systems Cleaning Specialist) or CVI (Cleaned Ventilation Inspector) certification is a strong asset.
- OSHA 10-Hour Safety Certification.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (Required).
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of residential airflow dynamics, static pressure, HRV/ERV operating principles, and standard ductwork construction.
- Physical Capabilities:
- Ability to lift up to 50–75 lbs of equipment (heavy vacuum hoses, compressors, ladders).
- Comfortable working in confined spaces (attics, crawl spaces) and at heights (ladders, roof hoods).
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and reach overhead for extended periods.
- Soft Skills: Excellent customer service and communication skills; punctual, neat appearance, and respectful of customer homes and property.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors across residential homes, multi-family residences, and light commercial properties.
- Frequent exposure to variable weather conditions, high dust environments (respirator/PPE required), and confined workspace areas.
- Standard schedule: Full-time (Monday–Friday) weekend work available upon request.
