Veterinary Assistant

We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant to join our team to care for animals and support our Veterinarians and technicians. You’ll play an important role in bringing comfort to our patients and ensuring the smooth running of our busy 3 doctor facility. One of the most important Veterinary Assistant responsibilities is to ensure all areas are clean, for animals and humans alike. We’ll rely on you to assist the Veterinarian in examinations and operations and assisting the licensed veterinary technicians. If you’re organized, quick on your feet and have the stomach to help with medical operations and euthanasia, we’d like to meet you.

Responsibilities

• Gathering basic vital signs, weight and history on our patients and placing notes into the medical record
• Clean cages and clean surrounding areas as time allows
• Sterilize equipment and clean examination tables and rooms
• Restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations
• Soothe upset or frightened animals
• Administer medication prescribed by Veterinarians
• Observe animal behavior or health condition and report to the Vet
• Help in cases of emergencies
• Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments or calling clients as directed by the vet team
• Keep accurate records and logs
• Reassure clients that their pets are being cared for and explain issues (e.g. lack of appointments, insurance matters)
• Advise pet owners on nutrition and healthcare
• Educate owners on medications, husbandry, and recommended practices for their pets as directed by the veterinarian

Skills

• Proven experience as a Veterinary Assistant or similar position working with animals is an advantage!
• Current or former pet ownership is an advantage
• Excellent communication skills - especially empathy!
• Patient and caring personality
• Ability to follow instructions properly
• Comfortable being around animals (cats, dogs)
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g. lift up to 40 lbs)
• Eager to learn and be a good teammate!
• Availability to occasionally work in emergencies and assist in the operating room
• High school diploma
• A certificate from a Veterinary Assistant program is a plus (but not necessary)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.00 - $17.00 per hour
