Veterinary Assistant

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our dynamic veterinary team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong passion for animal welfare and demonstrate excellent animal handling skills, combined with a solid understanding of veterinary procedures and terminology. The Veterinary Assistant will support veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing high-quality care, ensuring smooth clinic operations, and promoting a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for animals and clients alike.

Duties

• Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, surgeries, and treatments by handling animals safely and effectively.
• Perform animal husbandry tasks including feeding, grooming, cleaning enclosures, and maintaining sanitary conditions within the clinic.
• Support with animal restraint techniques to ensure safety during procedures such as IV insertions, catheterizations, or medication administration.
• Maintain accurate record keeping of patient information, treatment plans, medication logs, and procedural documentation.
• Prepare examination rooms, surgical suites, and kennels by ensuring all equipment is sterilized and ready for use following aseptic techniques.
• Administer medications under supervision, including injections and oral treatments, adhering to veterinary protocols.
• Communicate effectively with pet owners regarding basic pet care instructions, post-operative care, and behavioral guidance.
• Assist with diagnostic procedures such as blood draws or sample collection while practicing proper PPE use to ensure safety for staff and animals.
• Support front desk operations by scheduling appointments, managing client inquiries, and maintaining organized client records.
• Promote animal welfare through attentive care, understanding animal behavior cues, and ensuring humane handling at all times.

Experience

Candidates should possess prior experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal care setting with familiarity in handling diverse species including dogs, cats, and equines. Experience in kennel management or veterinary technician roles is highly desirable. Knowledge of veterinary terminology, aseptic techniques, medication administration, and record keeping is essential. Additional experience in critical care environments or surgical assistance will be considered an asset. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in animal restraint techniques, pet care practices, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). A background in equine handling or large animal care is advantageous but not mandatory. Strong communication skills combined with a genuine commitment to animal welfare are vital for success in this role.

Pay: $14.00 - $17.00 per hour
