Veterinary Technician

This position will operate out of our low cost walk-in clinic in the mornings and work with foster and shelter pets in the afternoon. This position also assists with the occasional Saturday drive through vaccine clinic, working around three Saturdays per year. This position is scheduled 40 hours per week- Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Essential Job Functions

• Restrain pets for exams, medical treatment, blood draws and vaccines
• Complete blood draws
• Administer vaccinations to pets
• Run diagnostic tests such as fecal, heartworm, ear swab, urinalysis
• Clean exam rooms and treatment areas
• Collect & record client & patient information
• Administer and dispense medications as directed by veterinarian
• Prepare estimates for procedures
• Explain follow-up and homecare instructions to pet owners and foster parents
• Position patients for and take radiographs
• Discharge patients based on the veterinarian’s orders
• Answer medical questions of foster parents, staff, adopters and clients
• Provide excellent customer service to clients, answering questions and directing clients to rooms
• Answer and assist on our Foster Emergency Hotline and vetting email on rotation with other staff
• Serve as backup to other vet team members as needed
• Performs other duties as assigned including assisting in other areas as needed

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Experience

• High School Diploma or GED required, veterinary technician degree and license preferred
• 2+ year experience working in a veterinary clinic or shelter medicine required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledgeable of basic canine and feline behavior and comfortability handling large rescue dogs and cats
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work well under pressure in a dynamic, team environment
• Passion for animals, animal welfare and the Gateway Pet Guardians mission
• Able to stand for long periods, able to lift 50+ lbs.

Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
