What they need

Vice President of Finance & Accounting

Location: Irvine, CA

Employment: Full-time

Compensation: $235,000–$260,000 base salary, plus a performance bonus of up to 25%

About the Opportunity

An established real estate investment and development organization is building a dedicated finance and accounting function to support its growing U.S. portfolio. The business holds interests in multifamily investments through partnerships, joint ventures, and other ownership structures.

This is an opportunity to build the function, shape its processes, and serve as a senior financial partner to leadership. The role offers a potential path to CFO as the organization grows.

The Role

The Vice President of Finance & Accounting will lead the transition of accounting responsibilities from an existing internal support team and establish a scalable finance operation. This person will set the department structure, strengthen controls and reporting, oversee investment accounting, and provide clear financial insight for business decisions.

The position calls for a leader who is comfortable setting strategy and working directly with the details during the build-out.

Key Responsibilities

Build the finance function

  • Develop a transition plan for bringing accounting responsibilities into a dedicated team while maintaining business continuity.
  • Define the team structure, staffing priorities, approval authority, operating calendar, and core procedures.
  • Establish documented processes and controls that can scale with the investment portfolio.

Own accounting and reporting

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual closes for the organization and related investment entities.
  • Oversee reconciliations, journal entries, financial statements, consolidation packages, and management reporting.
  • Produce reporting that explains investment performance, cash activity, commitments, distributions, and significant accounting matters.

Oversee real estate investment accounting

  • Manage accounting for partnership and joint venture interests, equity-method investments, capital contributions, distributions, and partner reporting.
  • Review investment agreements to understand ownership terms, reporting obligations, capital activity, and promote or waterfall provisions.
  • Work with investment and asset management teams to keep accounting records aligned with agreements and current activity.

Manage advisors, cash, and controls

  • Serve as the primary finance contact for auditors, tax advisors, lenders, valuation specialists, and investment partners.
  • Oversee liquidity, banking activity, capital calls, distributions, wire approvals, and related safeguards.
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and workflows.

Support planning and leadership

  • Lead budgeting and forecasting with investment, asset management, development, and executive teams.
  • Provide analysis for investments, financing decisions, portfolio reviews, and long-term plans.
  • Recruit and develop the finance and accounting team as the organization grows.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including substantial work in real estate investment, development, asset management, private equity, fund accounting, or joint venture accounting.
  • Experience building or materially improving accounting processes, reporting, controls, and finance operations.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. accounting principles as applied to real estate investments, partnerships, joint ventures, and equity-method investments.
  • Experience leading closes and coordinating audits, tax advisors, treasury controls, and executive reporting.
  • Ability to move between high-level decisions and hands-on accounting work.
  • Strong judgment, communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Preferred: CPA; multifamily investment or development experience; complex partnership and waterfall accounting; public accounting, advisory, valuation, or real estate private equity experience; and accounting systems implementation experience.

What Success Looks Like

Within the first 12 to 18 months, the successful candidate will have established a practical transition plan, a reliable close and reporting cycle, documented policies and controls, and a staffing plan for the growing finance function.

Benefits

Medical, dental, and vision coverage; a 401(k) plan; paid holidays and time off; flexible benefits options; and professional development support.
