Piece rate only — you’re paid for what you file, at published rates. No hourly wage, no guaranteed minimum, no cap. No work submitted, no pay.

The visual designer creates interesting, reader-friendly layouts for the Minnesota Daily, the independent student-run news organization at the University of Minnesota. This includes print layout of cover pages, special issues, and graphics. The visual designer will work closely with other Daily employees to create a cohesive, creative print layout.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the day-to-day design and creation of MN Daily pages, interesting and creative infographics, the design of some cover pages, and special issues
• Focuses on ensuring the newspaper is reader-friendly and quickly accessible for readers
• Works with reporters, section editors, and other Daily employees to determine graphic and design needs
• Remain on call in case problems arise with production staff
• Other duties as assigned by the Managing Production Editor

Qualifications

• Must be a University of Minnesota Student
• Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator
• Familiarity with the news-gathering process, journalism ethics, and the functions of all usual page elements, such as headlines, subheads, photos, cutlines, infographics and text
• Extensive design experience
• Familiarity with online programs that design visuals for online-exclusive stories
• Demonstrated knowledge of standard newspaper design practices
• Experience with the Daily’s page-design software or a similar professional-caliber program
