Vocal Choir Director

Overview: St. James Lutheran Church in Burnsville is a singing congregation! With two vocal choirs, a budding children's choir, and bell choir, we value sacred music and worship that blends ancient and modern music.

We are seeking a vocal choir director for the chancel choir* who will join a team of directors to plan meaningful worship. Each director has creative agency over the choir they direct.

This is a stipend position with an expectation of weekly rehearsals and participation in Sunday worship at 9:00 am as outlined on the worship calendar (approximately 2-3 Sundays per month, Sept.-May.)

* Further director opportunities include bell choir and/or children’s choir for an additional stipend.

Purpose: Lead and direct assigned choir(s) by selecting music, leading rehearsals, and providing a positive and welcoming environment for music fellowship among volunteers.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Research and select music appropriate for the Sunday you are leading worship.
• Lead rehearsal one time/week.
• Communicate with office staff for weekly bulletin.
• Communicate with AV/Tech staff for Sunday Worship sound and screen requirements.
• Communicate with Director of Music Ministry and Pastoral staff.
• Recruit new members.

Skills

• Proven experience conducting choirs.
• Knowledge of liturgy, religious music selection, and reading sheet music.
• Excellent communication skills to motivate and coordinate with choir members and church staff
• Ability to lead choir effectively while nurturing individual talents through mentoring.
• Proficiency in vocal training techniques.
• Familiarity with managing musical instruments like piano and other accompaniment tools.
• Leadership qualities that inspire enthusiasm, teamwork, and a shared vision for musical excellence within a faith-based setting.
