What they need

Volunteer Board Director

Fundraising & Legal Governance

Good Neighbours Canada

Good Neighbours Canada is a registered Canadian charity established in Ontario in 2017 and a member of the Good Neighbors global partnership, an international humanitarian and development organization founded in South Korea in 1991.

Guided by a commitment to children’s rights, gender equality and sustainable development, we help vulnerable individuals and communities strengthen their self-reliance. Our work combines international development and humanitarian projects with local programs in Canada, creating lasting impact through community empowerment, collaboration and respect for all people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, belief or nationality.

Job Description

Good Neighbours Canada is seeking one volunteer director to help expand our fundraising reach and strengthen the Board’s oversight of legal and regulatory risk. This is a governance role. The director will advise, ask critical questions, open doors and support sound decisions while respecting the Executive Director’s operational authority. Please note that as this is a volunteer role as required by Canadian non-profit law, there will be no renumeration offered.

Job Duties

  • Fulfil the fiduciary duties of a director and participate actively in Board decisions.
  • Help shape a realistic fundraising strategy, open appropriate doors and join selected donor or partner meetings.
  • Review legal, compliance and organizational risk matters at the governance level and flag when external expertise is needed.
  • Serve on or help lead a relevant committee or time-limited working group.
  • Act in GNCA’s best interests, maintain confidentiality and disclose conflicts of interest.
  • Fundraising and partnerships: major gifts, philanthropy, corporate partnerships, institutional funding, sponsorships or donor strategy, with a willingness to make introductions and participate in selected donor conversations.
  • Legal and regulatory governance: Canadian charity or nonprofit law, contracts, privacy, employment, risk, compliance, or legal issues affecting Canadian organizations working internationally.

The director will strengthen governance oversight but will not act as GNCA’s lawyer or provide formal legal opinions. GNCA will retain external legal counsel when professional advice is required.

Qualifications

  • Committed to GNCA’s mission and respectful international cooperation.
  • Strategic, practical and comfortable distinguishing governance from management.
  • Prepared to contribute time, judgment and networks. Previous board experience is helpful but not required.

Commitment

  • About 20 hours annually

Location

  • Board meetings: Four virtual meetings per year
  • In-person participation: Directors may be invited to major GNCA events, primarily held in the Greater Toronto Area
  • Office: Unit 213, 1585 Markham Road, Scarborough, ON M1B 2W1
