Volunteer Founding Trustee

Ireland Without Walls (IWW) is a new cultural organisation in development, intended to register as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in England and Wales.

Our purpose is rooted in a simple idea: Irish culture is best preserved by sharing it, not gatekeeping it.

Through Gaeilge, arts, heritage, education and diaspora engagement, we want to create meaningful opportunities for people to encounter, participate in and help sustain Irish culture.

The role:

We are recruiting three Founding Trustees to help form IWW’s first independent Board.

This is an opportunity to join at the beginning: helping establish a well-governed charity, shape its strategic direction and ensure that its ambitions are matched by responsible decision-making.

As a Trustee, you will share collective responsibility for the governance of IWW. You will help:

• Set and scrutinise IWW’s strategy, priorities and long-term direction.
• Ensure the organisation remains focused on its charitable purposes and public benefit.
• Oversee finances, risk, safeguarding and organisational sustainability alongside fellow Trustees.
• Support and constructively challenge the Founder & Executive Director and wider executive team.
• Contribute your own professional knowledge, experience and perspective to Board discussions.
• Help establish a healthy Board culture built on independence, integrity, curiosity and respectful disagreement.
• Act in the best interests of IWW rather than any individual, stakeholder or personal agenda.

Trustees govern collectively; they are not responsible for IWW’s routine day-to-day management.

Who we’re looking for:

You do not need previous Trustee experience. We are more interested in your judgment, integrity and what you can contribute to a developing organisation.

We would particularly welcome experience in areas such as education, culture, community development, leadership, public service, fundraising, communications, organisational development, academia, business or the voluntary sector, although this is not exhaustive.

You should be comfortable asking difficult questions, considering evidence, working collaboratively and challenging the Founder or fellow Trustees when you believe it is necessary.

Irish nationality, ancestry or residence in Ireland is not required. What matters is genuine engagement with IWW’s purpose and values.

Founding something together:

IWW is deliberately recruiting its Board before the organisation is fully built. Successful candidates will therefore have an unusual opportunity to help shape its governance, culture and strategic foundations rather than inheriting somebody else’s finished structure.

We are looking for Trustees who want to help build an organisation capable of eventually thriving beyond its founders.
