Volunteer Sewing Instructor

Location Hartford, CT

Time Commitment Approximately 1 hour per week (flexible) (we are ideally looking for someone who can come on a consistent basis, but are fine with someone who can make a 4-6 week commitment)

Position Type Volunteer (Individuals or small volunteer groups welcome)

About The Opportunity Chrysalis Center is seeking a volunteer or small volunteer group to lead a weekly sewing activity at our Recreation Center in Hartford.

Volunteers may

• Teach basic hand and machine sewing skills
• Help participants mend or alter clothing
• Answer sewing questions and share techniques
• Create a welcoming space for creativity, conversation, and community

Whether participants are learning for the first time or simply looking to practice, your time can help them build valuable life skills and confidence.

What We Provide

• Sewing machines
• Basic sewing equipment
• Small stipend for additional supplies, if needed
• Staff support during volunteer sessions

Chrysalis Center is a private, nonprofit organization serving individuals and families throughout Connecticut. We provide supportive housing, employment services, recovery support, and other community-based programs for people experiencing homelessness, poverty, mental health and substance use challenges, HIV/AIDS, and reentry after incarceration.

This volunteer opportunity takes place in our Recreation Center, a safe, substance-free daytime space where guests can enjoy hot meals, educational programming, job training, and a supportive community while working toward greater stability and independence.
