About Black Mental Health Matters

Black Mental Health Matters (BMHM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing mental health awareness, healing, and resources within Black communities. Through community programming, education, and media, BMHM works to dismantle stigma and connect people with culturally responsive mental health support.

Position Summary

BMHM is seeking a passionate, articulate, and reliable Volunteer Show Host to lead and represent the BMHM Show — an ongoing media platform dedicated to open, honest conversations about mental health, healing, and wellness in the Black community. The Show Host serves as the voice and face of the program, guiding conversations with guests, sharing resources, and creating a safe, engaging space for listeners and viewers.

This is a volunteer role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week, including pre-show preparation, recording/hosting sessions, and post-show follow-up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Host and lead each episode of the BMHM Show with professionalism, warmth, and authenticity.

  • Research topics, prepare interview questions, and coordinate with guests ahead of each episode.

  • Facilitate engaging, respectful conversations on mental health topics relevant to the Black community.

  • Collaborate with the production team on episode themes, scheduling, and format.

  • Promote episodes across personal and organizational social media/networks to grow audience reach.

  • Uphold BMHM's mission, tone, and messaging guidelines in all on-air and public-facing content.

  • Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when discussing personal stories or mental health experiences.

  • Provide listeners/viewers with accurate mental health resources and appropriate referrals when needed.

  • Attend regular check-ins or planning meetings with the Media & Programs team.

Qualifications

  • Strong public speaking, interviewing, and communication skills.

  • Genuine passion for mental health advocacy and Black community wellness.

  • Comfortable hosting on camera and/or on microphone in a remote or studio setting.

  • Reliable, organized, and able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule.

  • Prior experience in broadcasting, podcasting, public speaking, or media (preferred, not required).

  • Sensitivity and cultural competency around mental health topics affecting Black communities.

  • Background in psychology, social work, counseling, or lived experience is a plus, but not required.

Time Commitment

Approximately 5–10 hours per week, including:

  • Episode recording/hosting sessions (1–3 hours/week)

  • Guest coordination and topic research (2–3 hours/week)

  • Promotion, planning meetings, and administrative follow-up (1–4 hours/week)

What BMHM Offers

  • A meaningful platform to influence mental health conversations in the Black community.

  • Visibility and audience-building opportunities through BMHM's media channels.

  • Professional development in media hosting, public speaking, and mental health advocacy.

  • Community, mentorship, and connection with a mission-driven team.

  • A letter of recommendation or reference upon request after a minimum commitment period.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a brief statement of interest, a resume or bio, and (if available) a short sample of their hosting, speaking, or interviewing work to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Black Mental Health Matters is committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive volunteer environment. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds who share our commitment to community mental health.
