What they need
Job Summary
This position handles the flow of goods as they come through our sorting area, making sure everything ends up where it's supposed to go. You'll scan items as they arrive, check the destination code, and place them into the correct bin or line. Timing matters more some hours than others. Right after a truck unloads, the volume spikes and you're working through a backlog while still catching anything that's damaged or mislabeled. You'll also load sorted freight onto carts, push them to staging, and come back for the next round. Keeping bins stocked with labels falls on you too, along with noticing when one's about to run dry. Expect a good amount of walking through the shift, plus lifting that's usually manageable but steady. At the end of each run, you'll jot down counts so the numbers match what came off the truck. Sorting errors tend to surface early, right at the scan step, which keeps bigger problems from developing further down the line. Ability to multitask helps here, since attention gets pulled in different directions during busier stretches.
Responsibilities
- Scanning items and checking destination codes
- Direct freight into the correct sorting line or bin
- Setting aside anything that looks damaged
- Cart loading for staged, sorted freight
- Keep bin labels current and replace worn ones
- Recording end-of-run counts by hand or system
- Wipe down and reset stations before the next batch
- Notifying a lead when something doesn't scan correctly
Qualifications
- Little things stand out to you, like a shipping code that's a digit off from where it should be.
- If a coworker needs a hand or a question comes up, talking it through isn't something you avoid.
- Unexpected surges, like a delayed truck showing up all at once, don't throw off your rhythm much.
- Picking up new scanning equipment or a different sorting system doesn't take you long.
- You tend to be the one who shows up on time, which matters when a line is short-staffed.
- When equipment jams or a bin overflows, you're quick to sort it out rather than wait around.
- Your section usually stays orderly, since you put things back as you go rather than letting it pile up.
- A positive attitude carries you through the slower, more repetitive stretches of the shift.
