What they need
Job Summary
This role is built around getting freight sorted quickly and sent to the right place without mix-ups. You'll pull items from incoming pallets, read the routing information on each one, and place it into the correct bin or outbound line. The workload isn't constant. Right after a truck comes in, there's a burst of activity to work through everything before the next one arrives, and that's usually the busiest stretch of the shift. You'll also check items for visible damage as they pass through and set aside anything that doesn't look right. When things slow down between trucks, you're restocking bin labels and clearing out clutter around the stations. The job involves a lot of time on your feet, plus lifting that's frequent but manageable. At the close of each run, you'll record totals so the counts line up with what actually came off the truck. Sorting errors tend to get caught early, right at the scan point, before they can cause bigger problems further down the line. Must be reliable, since the sorting lines run on steady coverage throughout the day.
Responsibilities
- Pulling items from pallets and reading routing codes
- Sort freight into the correct bin or outbound line
- Setting aside damaged or questionable items
- Loading sorted material onto carts for staging
- Refill labels and bin supplies during slower stretches
- Recording end-of-run totals for each batch
- Clearing debris and resetting stations between trucks
- Notify a lead right away about scanning discrepancies
Qualifications
- You pick up on small mismatches, like a code that's slightly off from where an item's headed, without much prompting.
- Bringing up an issue with a coworker or a lead is something you do directly, not something you sit on.
- An unexpected surge, like two trucks arriving close together, doesn't throw off your pace much.
- New sorting equipment or a change in process doesn't take you long to get comfortable with.
- You're consistent about showing up on time, which matters more when the crew is already stretched thin.
- When a scanner glitches or a bin overflows, you handle it rather than waiting for someone else to notice.
- Your section tends to stay in order, since you sort things back into place as you go through the shift.
- Staying friendly with the rest of the crew makes the repetitive stretches easier to get through.
