Job Summary:

The Wastewater Operator I,II,III (or Trainee) is responsible for assisting in the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the City of Sparta Wastewater Treatment Plant. This role ensures that the treatment process meets all federal and state regulations and supports the city's environmental health.

Key Responsibilities:

Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, perform physical tasks, and use sound judgment to recognize problems and make necessary adjustments.

Duties include operating and maintaining wastewater equipment, collecting and testing samples, keeping accurate records, and maintaining plant grounds using tools, mowers, chainsaws, and tractors.

Must also be comfortable working from a boat on treatment ponds, assisting other utility departments, and responding to after-hours emergencies as needed.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Preferred qualifications include mechanical or electrical aptitude, experience with pumps, valves, or electrical controls, and basic computer skills for logging data and completing online regulatory reports.

Candidates should have strong attention to detail, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and be comfortable working around wildlife, insects, snakes, and other environmental hazards common in rural outdoor settings.

Prior experience in a municipal, industrial, or utility setting is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in wet, hot, cold, or hazardous conditions, with routine exposure to raw sewage, chemicals, and loud equipment.

Duties require the ability to lift 50 pounds or more, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or elevated areas as needed.

Employees must be able to navigate wooded, wet, or uneven terrain with potential wildlife encounters and wear required personal protective equipment, including gloves, respirators, and protective clothing.

Qualifications:

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) is required.

Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of continued employment.

Georgia Wastewater I, II, III, or Sewer Collections license is preferred but not required.

Special Requirements:

Must be available to respond to emergencies outside regular working hours as needed.

Employment requires an acceptable general background check, including local and state criminal history checks, a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, and satisfactory results from pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing.

This position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
