Wastewater Treatment Operator-In-Training

Company Description The Summerland Sanitary District, organized in 1957 by local residents, is an independent public agency that provides sewage services within the Summerland District boundaries. The District operates a modern tertiary treatment facility, upgraded in 1991 to deliver a higher quality of effluent. Historically a conventional activated sludge plant, the facility now utilizes advanced processes to protect public health and the environment. The treatment plant has a design capacity of 300,000 gallons per day, serving the needs of the Summerland community and surrounding area.

Role Description The Wastewater Treatment Operator-In-Training is a full-time, on-site role located in Summerland, CA. This role supports daily operation of the wastewater treatment plant, including monitoring equipment, recording data, and assisting with process control to maintain compliance with regulatory standards. Responsibilities include helping operate and maintain pumps, valves, and related mechanical systems, performing routine inspections, and reporting any irregularities to senior staff. The Operator-In-Training will assist with sampling, basic laboratory tests, and housekeeping duties to keep the facility clean, safe, and efficient. The role also involves learning standard operating procedures, safety practices, and becoming familiar with relevant regulations and industry best practices under the guidance of experienced operators.

Qualifications

• Candidates should possess foundational skills or strong aptitude in Plant Operations and basic mechanical systems.
• Candidates should possess interest or experience in Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment processes.
• Candidates should possess abilities in Process Control, including monitoring, data collection, and adjusting operating parameters under supervision.
• Candidates should possess familiarity or willingness to learn Pump Stations operation, inspection, and routine maintenance.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or certification in water/wastewater technology, environmental science, or related fields is beneficial.
• Ability to follow safety procedures, work outdoors in varying conditions, and perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and climbing.
• Strong attention to detail, reliable work habits, and willingness to learn from experienced staff.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet any applicable background or pre-employment screening requirements.
