Water Resources Engineer (Calgary)

At Onterris, we build careers grounded in purpose, responsibility, and real-world impact.

Our north star, For Planet and Progress, guides everything we do. We believe environmental responsibility and human progress go hand in hand. Across Canada, our engineers, scientists, field teams, and technical specialists work together to help clients develop, build, and operate projects that support both communities and the environment.

A Day in the Life

As a Water Resources Engineer in our Calgary office, you'll work on technically challenging water resources and river engineering projects across Western Canada. Our projects span rivers, bridges, pipelines, mines, industrial developments, transportation infrastructure, and communities, giving you exposure to a wide range of hydrotechnical challenges and environments.

You'll work on river engineering projects including bridge and watercourse crossing design, bank stabilization, erosion protection, flood mitigation works, river training, water intakes, and channel remediation. You'll also contribute to natural channel design, fish habitat enhancement and offsetting, fish passage, hydraulic and hydrologic modelling, mining and dam projects, construction support, and flood hazard assessments.

You'll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from field investigations and technical analysis through design, regulatory approvals, construction support, and post-construction monitoring.

Your work may include:

  • Designing and restoring natural channels and side channels, including fish habitat enhancement, offsetting, fish passage, and stream restoration projects.
  • Designing and assessing watercourse crossings, including bridges, culverts, pipelines, and other linear infrastructure.
  • Supporting river engineering projects involving bank stabilization, erosion protection, flood mitigation works, river training, water intakes, channel remediation, and stream restoration.
  • Developing and applying hydraulic and hydrologic models for river engineering, watercourse crossings, water management, and flood hazard assessments.
  • Supporting mining, transportation, infrastructure, and industrial projects through hydrotechnical assessments, water management planning, and regulatory approvals.
  • Completing erosion, scour, geomorphic, flood hazard, and other hydrotechnical assessments.
  • Preparing technical reports, engineering design documents, specifications, and regulatory applications.
  • Supporting regulatory approvals, permitting, and instream construction planning.
  • Conducting field investigations and site assessments.
  • Providing construction support, field engineering, and post-construction monitoring.
  • Supporting project delivery, including scope, schedules, budgets, and technical deliverables, with opportunities to take increasing responsibility for project management.
  • Working collaboratively with engineers, scientists, environmental specialists, clients, regulators, contractors, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior team members.

Field work varies by project and may account for approximately 5 to 30% of your time.  You will keep safety central to planning and design.

This role is well suited to engineers who enjoy variety and want a career that combines technical analysis, engineering design, field work, construction support, and client-facing responsibilities.

The compensation range for this role is $35.00 to $60 commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, and professional registration.

Why Onterris?

Interesting, Technically Challenging Work

Our projects span multiple industries and environments. You'll work on a range of river and water resources challenges rather than focusing on a single type of project or client.

Work Alongside Strong Environmental Expertise

Our water resources engineers work closely with environmental scientists and engineers from other disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach creates opportunities to work on diverse river projects and develop solutions that consider both engineering and environmental objectives.

Take Ownership and Grow

We trust our engineers with meaningful responsibility and provide opportunities to take increasing ownership of technical work and project delivery. As your experience grows, so does your opportunity to lead projects, work directly with clients, and take on greater responsibility.

What You Bring

We're looking for an engineer who enjoys technically challenging work, likes variety, and wants a career that combines technical, field, and project responsibilities.

  • A bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources
  • 3+ years of experience in hydrotechnical or water resources engineering.
  • A strong foundation in hydraulics and hydrology
  • An understanding of erosion, scour, flood hazards, and river processes.
  • Experience with HEC-RAS
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strongl attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Initiative, sound judgement, and a desire to take increasing ownership of technical work, project delivery, and client relationships.
  • Practical field and construction experience, or a willingness to develop these skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Experience working with regulators, clients, contractors, or multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Registration as a P.Eng., or eligibility for registration within approximately one year, in Alberta or another Canadian province.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's licence with a satisfactory driving record.
