What they need

About the Organization

SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition (SELAH) is a neighborhood-level 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2017, active in Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz, Atwater Village, and Hollywood. Our volunteer-powered drop-in and outreach programs run every weekend, powered by a volunteer base of nearly 800, including many volunteers new to SELAH on any given weekend.

The Opportunity

SELAH is piloting a paid, part-time Weekend Program Assistant role to ensure weekend drop-in and outreach programs have a consistent, knowledgeable point person that can travel between sites. This position provides institutional knowledge and handles routine troubleshooting so Program Directors and Site Leads can focus on higher-level site leadership. This person will anchor:

  • Drop-In Support at SELAH's two flagship sites: Silver Lake (Saturday, 12:30-3:30p) and Hollywood (Sunday, 1-4p), which are the highest-traffic, most multi-station programs (showers, meals, clothing, bike repair, phone charging, ID/EBT assistance). And our monthly Sunday Social (1st Sunday, 11a-1p)
  • Outreach Support across multiple locations: Saturday (Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Atwater, Hollywood, LA River) and Sunday (Echo Park, Hollywood, LA River).

Key ResponsibilitiesDrop-In Support

  • General: Support weekend drop-in programming and serve as staff point of contact for site partners. (Saturday: Silver Lake. Sunday: Atwater, once monthly, Hollywood, weekly)
  • Pre-Shift Setup: Arrive at least 1 hour before each drop-in program to confirm and refill supply levels, help stage stations as asked, and orient first-time volunteers who arrive early. Flag any low supplies in appropriate Slack channels.
  • Real-Time Troubleshooting: Leverage Program Manuals to serve as the go-to knowledge holder for volunteers — station logistics, where supplies are, how specific services work — so the Program Director/Site Lead isn't fielding every question.
  • Volunteer/Security Support: Flag any conduct or safety concerns to the Site Lead/Security; serve as Security point of contact for report outs.
  • Supply Restocking: Coordinate with Program Manager and/or volunteer leaders to physically restock, organize, or retrieve supplies mid-program when levels run low.
  • Breakdown: Support site close-down — supply count-out, trash/recycling, returning unused stock, securing the site, and reconciling leftover outreach supplies.

Outreach Support

  • General: Support outreach circuits across multiple locations. (Saturday: Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Atwater, Hollywood, LA River; Sunday: Echo Park, Hollywood, LA River).
  • Pre-Shift Setup: Arrive at each outreach program’s meeting location prior to route departure as needed to ensure outreach supplies are stocked and volunteers are supported. Flag any low supplies in appropriate Slack channels.
  • Real-Time Support: Orient new outreach volunteers to CRM and safety as needed, be available by phone and Slack to answer questions, and provide safety check-ins; serve as the go-to contact for organization or complex participant-related questions.
  • Volunteer Support: Supplemental support of outreach routes as needed.
  • Confirm: Confirm all outreach team members have returned safely.

Van Operations

  • Critical Shift Filling: Coordinate and serve as primary van driver for outreach operations as needed, transporting volunteers and supplies between sites.
  • Maintenance: Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure van safety and proper maintenance.

Administrative Duties

  • Reporting: Submit a brief shift report detailing routes covered, supply needs, incidents, and participant notes to the Volunteer & Program Associate within 24 hours of weekend shift. Follow up with outreach teams, log any participant follow-up needs in CRM.

All reports for the preceding week must be submitted by the end of the day on Monday to ensure we have a comprehensive update for a Tuesday staff meeting. Please note that completing these reports is considered compensable work, with a minimum of two hours of pay required per California law. If your schedule permits, we encourage you to attend our weekly staff meetings held on Tuesdays from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

  • Weekend In-Kind Donation Management: Log basic details on any in-kind donations received on the weekend to be processed by Program Manager and Volunteer & Program Associate during the week. Label in-kind donations to distinguish items for on-site use and those requiring relocation.
  • Donation Pickups: Coordinate with the Program Manager regarding weekend donation pickups.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Consistent weekend availability (both Saturday and Sunday), limited weekday availability.
  • Prior experience as a SELAH volunteer or comparable direct-service experience.
  • Superior interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable orienting and guiding volunteers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Able to show proactive ownership of shared environments, ensuring communal spaces are kept clean, orderly, and intuitive for collective use.
  • Valid California’s Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Reliable transportation to move between sites and transport supplies.Mileage reimbursement will be provided for use of a personal vehicle for work-related travel, in accordance with IRS standard mileage rates.
  • Excellent Google Workspace skills.
  • Can pick up new software intuitively, adapt to new tools.
  • A commitment to the dignity of unhoused neighbors in Los Angeles.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, and to perform physical tasks that may include bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak Spanish at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • California Food Handler Card. Otherwise, obtain certification within 30 days of hire at SELAH's expense.
