Position Summary

The Welder/Fitter is responsible for fitting, aligning, and welding structural tube and plate assemblies according to engineered drawings and weld procedures. This position requires precision, attention to detail, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints for structural fabrication projects.

Welding

Fit and weld structural tube assemblies and components per fabrication drawings and WPS requirements. Perform layout, cutting, grinding, and fitting operations to prepare materials. Verify dimensions and alignment using measuring tools, squares, and levels. Perform MIG (GMAW) and/or Flux Core (FCAW) welding carbon steel materials. Operate welding machines, grinders, saws, and other fabrication tools in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and shop protocols.

Safety

Safely lift, move, and position materials using proper techniques and mechanical assistance when needed. Follow all safety procedures, including PPE use, material handling, and safe equipment operation. Must always wear appropriate protective gear, including welding helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe boots. Must be able to identify potential safety risks in the work area and take proactive steps to eliminate or report them.

Procedure

Inspect welds for conformance and report nonconformities to supervision. Must be able to follow approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and fabrication drawings to ensure structural integrity and regulatory compliance.

Performance

Maintain high-quality standards in weld appearance, size, and penetration. Work independently or as part of a fabrication team to meet production schedules. Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Quality Assurance

Comply with the company safety policies and requirements. Attend scheduled safety training. Practices safe work habits and follows general safety procedures such as proper lifting and bending, ergonomics, proper use of equipment and use of personal protection equipment (PPE). Strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement consistently.

Knowledge

Familiarity with fabrication tools such as saws, grinders, torches, and layout tables. Strong understanding of weld joint preparation and fit-up techniques for tube steel. Basic proficiency in MIG (GMAW) and/or Flux Core (FCAW) welding processes.

Skills Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings. Visual acuity to read small print, interpret data, inspect parts, and identify quality defects. Adheres to and ensures lockout procedures are followed any time the equipment is being cleaned or maintained.

Work Environment

Comfortable working in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to welding arcs, grinding, cutting, fabrication noise, heat, sparks, and occasional fumes. Indoor fabrication shop environment. Ability to stand, walk, and move about the fabrication shop and production floor for extended periods (up to 10 hours per day). Exposure to welding arcs, grinding, cutting, and fabrication noise.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification

Completion of welding certification program or equivalent hands-on welding experience (1–2 years preferred). AWS D1.1 or equivalent certification is a plus.
