Students will explore fundamental programming concepts, robotics, engineering, and computational thinking through creative, project-based activities. Lessons introduce students to coding platforms and programmable robots, encouraging them to design, build, test, troubleshoot, and improve their projects.
This role is ideal for students and recent graduates in computer science, engineering, education, or related fields who enjoy working with children and making technology accessible to young learners. Curriculum, robotics kits, and lesson materials are provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging, hands-on coding and robotics classes for 4th–5th grade students.
- Facilitate age-appropriate activities, including:
- Coding Fundamentals: Sequencing, loops, conditionals, variables, and basic programming logic.
- Block-Based Programming: Introduce students to platforms such as Scratch, MakeCode, and other beginner-friendly coding tools.
- Robotics & Engineering: Guide students through building, programming, and testing robots using educational robotics kits such as LEGO Education SPIKE Prime, EV3, or similar platforms.
- Creative Coding Projects: Help students develop interactive games, animations, and other projects that encourage creativity and problem-solving.
- Computational Thinking: Encourage students to debug programs, recognize patterns, test solutions, and improve their designs.
- Demonstrate coding and robotics concepts clearly while allowing students opportunities for independent exploration.
- Adapt instruction to accommodate different experience levels and learning paces.
- Maintain a positive, organized, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Manage student behavior, classroom transitions, and participation effectively.
- Prepare and organize equipment and materials before each class.
- Ensure robotics kits, laptops, and other materials are handled and stored properly.
- Track attendance and submit brief classroom reports to the Program Coordinator.
- Communicate professionally with school staff and the program team.
- Follow all school-site procedures and safety expectations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience working directly with elementary-aged children through teaching, tutoring, camps, after-school programs, STEM programs, robotics clubs, mentoring, coaching, or youth development.
- Foundational understanding of coding concepts such as sequencing, loops, conditionals, and variables.
- Familiarity with at least one programming language or educational coding platform.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to younger students with varying levels of experience.
- Strong communication and classroom management skills.
- Comfortable independently leading and supervising a classroom of elementary students.
- Able to follow provided curriculum while adapting instruction to student needs.
- Must reside in San Francisco or within 20 miles of San Francisco.
- Must have availability during weekday mornings and be able to commit to the winter program term.
- Must pass a background check and complete fingerprinting/Live Scan.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in computer science, software engineering, robotics, education, or related fields.
- Experience teaching Scratch, MakeCode, Python, or other introductory programming platforms.
- Familiarity with LEGO Education robotics kits, including SPIKE Prime, WeDo, Mindstorms EV3, or similar educational robotics systems.
- Experience facilitating project-based learning, robotics challenges, or hands-on engineering activities.
- Ability to support both collaborative programming and independent student projects.
- Experience teaching in elementary classrooms or school enrichment programs.
- Patient, organized, dependable, and enthusiastic about working with children.
Schedule & Commitment
This position is for the Winter 2026–2027 term, with classes held during weekday mornings at an elementary school in San Francisco.
Exact teaching days, class times, and the start date are still being finalized. Applicants should have flexibility during weekday mornings and be able to commit to a consistent schedule once confirmed.
