What they need

JOB Summary:

The Women’s Program Recovery Case Manager plays a key role in supporting the long-term recovery and empowerment of women in The Midnight Mission’s residential program. This position integrates trauma-informed care, harm reduction principles, and evidence-based 12-step facilitation to promote healing, stability, and purpose in the lives of women with substance use disorders. This role requires deep understanding of gender-responsive approaches to addiction treatment, and a commitment to helping women build self-efficacy and safety after experiences of trauma, abuse, or homelessness.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Trauma-Informed Case Management

  • Build trusting, respectful, and empowering relationships with program participants rooted in empathy, cultural humility, and psychological safety.
  • Complete strength-based, trauma-informed biopsychosocial assessments with special attention to histories of gender-based violence, parenting, complex trauma, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Develop and monitor Individualized Service Plans (ISPs) with clearly defined goals that integrate recovery, housing, health, and personal growth.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one case management sessions that foster healing, resilience, relapse prevention, and accountability.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing, reflective listening, and harm reduction strategies in all engagement.

12-Step and Recovery Integration

  • Facilitate access to 12-step programming both onsite and in the community, ensuring participants are supported in building recovery networks.
  • Help participants explore their personal values, spiritual growth, and autonomy within the framework of the 12-step model.
  • Collaborate with participants to build routines and rituals that support ongoing abstinence and reduce relapse risk.
  • Work collaboratively with sponsors, peer support staff, and clinicians to ensure holistic support.

Service Coordination & Advocacy

  • Provide warm hand-offs and direct referrals to community partners for services such as mental health treatment, domestic violence support, childcare, legal aid, and medical care.
  • Support clients through complex systems navigation (e.g., CalWORKs, courts, immigration, reunification with children).
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to ensure continuity of care and whole-person support.
  • Actively advocate for participants' needs in all systems of care.

Program Leadership & Collaboration

  • Help cultivate a program culture that prioritizes emotional safety, dignity, consent, and choice.
  • Co-facilitate psychoeducational groups on recovery, empowerment, boundaries, parenting, and wellness.
  • Uphold program rules with consistency and compassion, helping participants repair ruptures and reflect on triggers.
  • Contribute to continuous program improvement through feedback, documentation, and collaboration with supervisors.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain timely and accurate records in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and internal databases.
  • Track participant progress, challenges, and outcomes through structured documentation aligned with funding and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare incident reports, case notes, assessments, and monthly reports as needed.

Health Education & Evidence-Based Group Facilitation

  • Design and facilitate trauma-informed, evidence-based recovery groups that support self-awareness, relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and long-term healing.
  • Provide health education on topics such as nutrition, sexual health, stress management, boundaries, and healthy relationships—tailored specifically for women in recovery.
  • Utilize curricula aligned with best practices from SAMHSA, CCAPP, and feminist-informed care frameworks.
  • Foster an emotionally safe, inclusive group environment that encourages peer connection, vulnerability, and empowerment.
  • Adapt group content to accommodate diverse learning needs, cultural identities, literacy levels, and trauma histories.
  • Center participant voice, autonomy, and lived experience in all group discussions and activities.

Intake, Screening, and Orientation

  • Greet all new participants with warmth, respect, and a nonjudgmental presence to foster initial emotional safety and rapport.
  • Conduct trauma-informed screenings and comprehensive assessments upon entry, with sensitivity to histories of substance use, trauma, mental health, parenting, and housing instability.
  • Collaborate with clinical and program staff to determine appropriate level of care and ensure immediate needs are addressed (e.g., medical referrals, crisis intervention, hygiene needs).
  • Clearly explain program structure, expectations, and participant rights during orientation, ensuring accessibility across literacy levels and cultural identities.
  • Guide participants through the intake paperwork and ensure understanding of consents, confidentiality, and available supports.
  • Introduce participants to the community through an intentional welcome process that reduces stigma and builds early engagement.
  • Establish initial Individualized Service Plans in partnership with the participant, centered on their recovery goals, needs, and strengths.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Current RADT certification; CADC I or II strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in addiction recovery, case management, or trauma-informed care.
  • Prior experience working with women, survivors of violence, and those with co-occurring disorders strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of gender-responsive addiction recovery and trauma-informed care principles (per SAMHSA & CCAPP guidance).
  • Working knowledge of the 12-step philosophy and recovery community resources.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, patience, and ability to hold space for others without judgment.
  • Crisis de-escalation and conflict mediation skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, clear boundaries, and cultural responsiveness in all interactions.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office and case management systems (HMIS preferred).
  • Bilingual in Spanish highly preferred.

Organizational Culture Expectations:

  • Embody The Midnight Mission’s values of compassion, dignity, and service.
  • Champion a feminist, strength-based approach to healing and community care.
  • Engage in regular training and supervision to enhance trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
  • Be accountable to both program structure and participant growth, modeling integrity and humility.

Physical & Work Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to navigate indoor and outdoor environments in both residential and outreach settings.
  • Occasional travel for client appointments, program meetings, or training sessions.
