What they need

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Workroom Manager to oversee our in-house workroom and lead the production of custom draperies, reupholstery, pillows, cushions, bedding, and other sewn furnishings.

This role combines skilled craftsmanship with day-to-day workroom management. You will organize projects, plan production, coordinate materials, and ensure every finished piece meets our standards for quality, accuracy, and timely completion. The ideal candidate is comfortable working directly with fabrics and furniture while partnering with our design, sales, and installation teams to bring custom projects to life.

Key Responsibilities

Workroom Management

  • Manage daily workroom operations, including project scheduling, priorities, workflow, and deadlines.
  • Review incoming projects to confirm measurements, materials, fabrication details, and labor requirements before production begins.
  • Coordinate workroom staff or outside fabricators as needed, providing clear instructions and monitoring progress and quality.
  • Track fabrics, trims, supplies, and project materials; coordinate ordering to keep production moving.
  • Maintain an organized workroom and ensure equipment is operated safely and properly maintained.
  • Identify production challenges early and communicate solutions, schedule changes, or material needs to the appropriate team members.

Custom Sewing & Upholstery

  • Measure, cut, sew, and fabricate custom draperies, shades, valances, pillows, cushions, bedding, and other soft furnishings.
  • Complete reupholstery and custom upholstery projects, including fabric removal, patterning, cutting, sewing, padding, and fitting covers as required.
  • Read and interpret work orders, measurements, sketches, and design specifications.
  • Handle delicate and high-end fabrics with care, accounting for pattern matching, fabric direction, repeat, and placement.
  • Operate industrial sewing machines and upholstery tools with accuracy and consistency.
  • Inspect work throughout production and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper fit, finish, and craftsmanship.

Project Coordination & Quality Control

  • Partner with design and sales teams to determine practical fabrication methods and clarify custom-order details.
  • Provide fabric yardage estimates, labor estimates, and production timelines to support accurate quoting.
  • Communicate project status and resolve fabrication questions before they affect quality or delivery.
  • Check finished products against approved specifications, including dimensions, construction, pattern alignment, and finishing details.
  • Coordinate packaging, labeling, and preparation for installation, delivery, or customer pickup.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in custom drapery, upholstery, or soft furnishings production, with demonstrated skills in both custom sewing and reupholstery.
  • Experience managing a workroom, leading production, or coordinating multiple custom projects preferred.
  • Proficiency with industrial sewing machines, upholstery tools, and related workroom equipment.
  • Working knowledge of textiles, linings, interlinings, trims, cushion construction, and fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to calculate fabric requirements and accurately interpret measurements, work orders, and design specifications.
  • Strong craftsmanship, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management, with the ability to balance hands-on production and workroom oversight.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $23.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • 401(k) matching

Application Question(s):

  • Which of these can you complete independently, without training? Write all that apply: custom draperies, furniture reupholstery, boxed cushions with zippers, pillows, Roman shades, bedding. Only work you have personally completed.
  • How have you managed a workroom or coordinated several custom orders at once? Walk me through how you schedule production, organize materials, and keep projects on time.
  • Walk me through how you would take a custom order from a designer’s specifications to a finished piece. How do you calculate fabric and labor, clarify missing details, and check quality before delivery?
