What they need

Works Manager – Precision Engineering / Manufacturing

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join our established, family-run precision engineering business as a Works Manager.

As a small, family-run business, we pride ourselves on quality, customer service and working together as a team. We are looking for an experienced, hands-on engineering professional who will become an important part of the business and take responsibility for the day-to-day running of our manufacturing operations.

The successful candidate will have a strong mechanical engineering/manufacturing background. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly advantageous:

CNC Milling & Turning | Laser Cutting | Waterjet Cutting | Surface Grinding | Chemical Etching | Pressed Metal Components

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day planning, coordination and control of our manufacturing operations, including the management of a small production team of approximately 6–10 people.

This is very much a hands-on Works Manager position. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable managing people and production as they are getting involved on the shop floor when required.

The successful candidate will ensure that customer orders are manufactured efficiently, safely, on time and to the required quality standards, while working closely with our office and quality teams to manage priorities and delivery commitments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage the daily production schedule, allocating people, machinery and resources to achieve customer delivery requirements.
  • Manage, support and motivate a small production team of approximately 6–10 people, monitoring performance, developing individuals and addressing any issues where necessary.
  • Monitor production throughout the day and adjust priorities and schedules where necessary.
  • Identify resource requirements or potential shortages, including staffing, materials, tooling and consumables, and ensure these are addressed promptly.
  • Monitor manufacturing processes and identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, quality and cost.
  • Monitor production times against expectations, investigate anomalies and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Ensure manufacturing activities are carried out in accordance with the company's Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental procedures.
  • Support and maintain our ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality systems and work closely with our Quality and Health & Safety support.
  • Ensure manufactured products are correctly inspected, packed and dispatched to meet customer delivery requirements.
  • Ensure production equipment is maintained in accordance with planned maintenance schedules.
  • Identify training and development requirements and provide appropriate on-the-job training in line with the company's skills matrix.
  • Ensure new production and warehouse employees receive appropriate induction and training.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and ensure a clean, organised and safe production environment.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director and office team to achieve production targets and wider business objectives.
  • Promote a positive, professional and cooperative working environment across the business.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a strong mechanical engineering or manufacturing background.
  • Be able to confidently read and interpret detailed engineering drawings, including dimensions and tolerances.
  • Have previous experience within a precision engineering, production or manufacturing environment.
  • Have experience using inspection equipment such as micrometers, verniers, height gauges, CMM and optical measurement equipment.
  • Have a practical, hands-on approach and a willingness to understand the machinery, processes and equipment used within the business.
  • Have previous supervisory, Works Manager, Production Manager or similar manufacturing management experience.
  • Have good Health & Safety knowledge and experience of implementing procedures within a manufacturing environment.
  • Have ISO 9001 experience as essential, with AS9100 experience being a distinct advantage.
  • Be highly organised with the ability to plan, prioritise and react to changing production requirements.
  • Be computer literate and a confident written and verbal communicator.
  • Be comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility for day-to-day production.
  • Have strong people-management skills and the ability to motivate and develop a small team.

Working Hours

Monday to Thursday: 08:00 – 16:30
Friday: 08:00 – 15:30

Some flexibility to work occasional overtime may be required to meet production demands.
