WORKSHOP MANAGER – AUTOMOTIVE
Auto Trans Australia
Alexandria, Sydney NSW
Full Time
About Auto Trans Australia
Auto Trans Australia is one of Australia’s leading specialist automatic transmission workshops, operating a large, high-volume facility in Alexandria.
We specialise in transmission diagnostics, servicing, repairs and complete transmission overhauls across a wide range of European, Japanese, Korean and American vehicles.
We are looking for an experienced Workshop Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day running of our workshop and lead our team.
The Role
This is a hands-on management position for someone who understands how a busy automotive workshop should operate.
You will be responsible for keeping jobs moving through the workshop, managing technicians, maintaining quality standards and ensuring vehicles are completed efficiently and on time.
You will work closely with senior management, service advisors, technicians, transmission builders and our parts team.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the workshop
- Plan, schedule and allocate work across technicians
- Monitor every job through the workshop and keep work progressing
- Manage workshop capacity, productivity and technician efficiency
- Ensure jobs are completed correctly and within expected timeframes
- Oversee diagnostics, repairs, servicing, transmission removal and installation
- Assist technicians with difficult diagnostic and technical issues
- Carry out quality control before vehicles are released
- Manage comebacks and identify the root cause of workmanship issues
- Maintain high standards of workmanship across the workshop
- Lead, support and hold technicians accountable for performance
- Coordinate with service advisors and parts to prevent unnecessary delays
- Maintain workshop cleanliness, organisation and equipment
- Ensure WHS procedures and company processes are followed
- Identify opportunities to improve workshop systems, productivity and workflow
- Report directly to senior management on workshop performance
About You
We are looking for someone who is organised, technically strong and knows how to manage people.
Ideally, you will have:
- Automotive mechanical trade qualification
- Strong automotive diagnostic and mechanical knowledge
- Previous experience as a Workshop Manager, Workshop Controller, Foreman or Leading Hand
- Experience managing technicians in a busy automotive workshop
- Strong understanding of workshop workflow and job allocation
- Excellent problem-solving ability
- High standards when it comes to workmanship and quality control
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to deal with pressure and changing workshop priorities
- Current Australian driver's licence
Automatic transmission experience is highly regarded but not essential. Mechanical experience is!
We are more interested in finding a strong automotive workshop leader who can understand the operation, manage people and take ownership.
What We Offer
This is an opportunity to take a senior position within an established specialist automotive business.
You'll be joining a large, well-equipped workshop with experienced technicians, specialist transmission builders and a strong support team.
We offer:
- Excellent salary package for the right person
- Full-time, permanent position
- Monday to Friday
- No weekend work
- Established and well-equipped workshop
- Large existing customer and trade base
- Strong support from senior management
- Opportunity to genuinely take ownership of workshop operations
- Long-term career opportunity
We Want Someone Who Takes Ownership
We're not looking for someone who simply allocates jobs in the morning.
We want someone who knows what's happening across the workshop, keeps technicians productive, identifies problems before they become delays and takes responsibility for getting vehicles completed properly and on time.
If you're an experienced automotive professional who enjoys leading a workshop and wants to step into a senior role with genuine responsibility, we'd like to hear from you.
