What they need
Part-time hours. A team around you. And the best part of a child's day, in your hands.
Children arrive at 7:15am half awake, shoes half on, one of them still chewing toast in the car park. By 8:45am they walk into class fed, settled and in a decent mood.
At 3pm they come flying back out with a week's worth of energy, and for the next three hours you are the best part of their day.
That is the job. It matters far more than most people give it credit for.
You will be delivering planned activity sessions: games, sport, crafts, free play, as part of a small team, working under our Setting Leader. The sessions are designed for you. Your job is to bring them to life.
Before you apply, one thing to be straight about: every Play Leader at School of Play attends a weekly training session.
All of them, across every setting we run. It is how we keep our standards high, and it is part of the job, not an optional extra bolted on at the end of your week.
If that puts you off, this is probably not the right role for you. If it sounds like exactly the kind of place you want to work, keep reading.
The Hours
Before school: 7:15am-9am
After school: 3pm-6pm
Monday-Friday, term time.
The middle of the day is yours.
With the opportunity to work at our Holiday camps.
What the role actually looks like
You will work under our Setting Leader, who runs the setting day-to-day. Your job is to plan and deliver the sessions brilliantly. To show up ready.
To know every child by name. To spot the one who is having a rough morning and handle it quietly before it becomes a problem at the door.
What you will be doing
> Delivering planned activity sessions: sport, games, crafts and free play
Greeting children by name and helping them settle at the start of every session
Supporting children's wellbeing and behaviour throughout the club
Working as part of a small team under the Setting Leader
Attending weekly training as a standard part of your role every week, not just at the start
Keeping registers, ratios and safeguarding records accurate every day
Handing every child over safely and on time
This is for you if
> You enjoy working with primary-aged children, and it shows in the room
You are reliable to the minute, because a club that opens at 7:34am is a problem for 20 families
You see weekly training as part of doing the job well, not time you would rather have back
You can take a planned session and deliver it with energy and warmth, even on a wet Tuesday in February
You want to work somewhere that holds itself to a standard and expects the same from you
This is not for you if
- You want a job where nobody checks how you are doing or how the children are getting on
- Ongoing training feels like something to be tolerated rather than valued
-Safeguarding paperwork feels like an optional extra
What you get
£13.15 to £13.50 per hour, depending on experience. You will know your exact rate before you interview, not after.
A paid day off for your birthday (you request this off on our system). If it falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, take another day around it instead.
Paid safeguarding, paediatric first aid and food hygiene training. Every renewal is booked and paid for before it expires. You will never turn up to a shift out of date.
Your enhanced DBS, arranged and paid for by us.
Weekly training as a standard part of your role. Not a cost to you, in time or money. An investment in making you better at what you do.
Free childcare if you work during our holiday cam
Where this goes next
We open in more schools every term, and we promote from within. The Setting Leaders running our clubs started where you are about to.
If you want to grow into a lead role, running your own setting, managing your own team, planning your own sessions, say so on your application, and we will talk about it at interview rather than a year from now.
What you need
Required: A level 3 qualification in Early years
A growth mindset: someone who sees every session and every training week as a chance to improve. You take feedback well, you reflect on what did not work, and you show up the next day trying to do it better.
Reliability and a genuine enjoyment of working with primary-aged children
An enhanced DBS, or the willingness to get one. We arrange it and pay for it
