Writer/Author, Print Journalism

NueWay Studios is a woman-owned design and video firm that works with federal and public-sector clients. We are building the team for a federal hospital communications contract at a military medical center in Bethesda, Maryland, and we are looking for one writer and author with a print journalism background.

This is a full-time, onsite W-2 employee position with NueWay Studios, Monday through Friday during normal government operations, at the Bethesda, Maryland worksite. The anticipated start date is December 1, 2026, with a one-year base period and two potential option years, subject to exercise. The position depends on the contract being awarded. We are asking for written commitments so we can name you in our proposal.

Employment type: W-2 employee.
Pay: $38 to $67 per hour.
Benefits: Earned sick and safe leave in accordance with Maryland and federal law, workers' compensation coverage, and unemployment insurance.
Other compensation: None.

What you will do

• Develop and manage an editorial calendar for print and long-form digital publications, and lead feature stories from pitch through interviews, writing, layout and publication
• Find and develop story ideas on clinical advances, research, patient stories and staff achievements
• Interview medical staff, patients, families and subject-matter experts with care and sensitivity
• Write, rewrite and edit copy in AP Style, using news format, traditional leads and active sentences
• Work with photographers, videographers and graphic designers on multimedia story packages
• Write messaging for internal and external audiences, and support leadership with crisis communication plans
• Monitor media coverage and report on how communications perform
• Help plan press conferences, media briefings and community events
• Submit products to the Public Affairs Office for review before posting, and compile weekly external communications reports
• Meet daily and weekly deadlines and short-notice requests

What you need

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or a related field
• 5 or more years of journalism or professional writing experience, with a strong portfolio of published articles showing interviewing, narrative storytelling and long-form writing
• Experience in healthcare communications, military public affairs or a similar regulated, high-visibility environment
• Thorough understanding of HIPAA and Protected Health Information, especially when interviewing patients
• Project management skills, including managing an editorial calendar and several stories at once
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with interview subjects
• Ability to commute daily to Bethesda, Maryland
• Ability to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) and pass the required federal background screening
