Position Summary

This part-time, 9-month position provides writing and academic support to La Salle University student-athletes, helping them strengthen their writing skills across disciplines with an emphasis on clarity, grammar, organization, and critical thinking. As a member of the Academic Support for Student-Athletes (ASSA) team, this student-facing position delivers targeted academic interventions designed to promote academic success, persistence, and NCAA eligibility, with particular emphasis on supporting at-risk student-athletes.

The position develops and facilitates targeted workshops and academic support initiatives focused on foundational writing courses, including ENG 110, ENG 111, and ENG 210, while providing individualized academic assistance through one-on-one consultations for student-athletes who seek support independently or are referred by faculty, coaches, or professional staff. The role works collaboratively with the ASSA team to identify students in need of academic intervention, develop strategies to improve academic performance, and connect student-athletes with appropriate campus resources. Strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to build positive relationships with students and campus partners, and a commitment to fostering academic excellence are essential for success in this role.

Essential Duties

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring sessions for students at all writing levels.
  • Work with students to guide them through the writing process, including breaking down assignments, organizing and outlining information, and assisting student-athletes in draft edits.
  • Guide students in developing time management strategies for complex or long-term writing assignments.
  • Provide support in content areas by enhancing critical thinking and reading comprehension skills.
  • Instruct students on proper use of citation formats, including MLA, APA, and Chicago, as appropriate.
  • Offer constructive feedback on grammar, organization, thesis development, and citation styles.
  • Maintain accurate records for tutoring sessions in Starfish.
  • Conduct academic skills workshops for small groups of students to address gaps in knowledge when patterns develop.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with all rules and regulations of the NCAA, the Atlantic 10, the MAAC, and La Salle University.
  • Report potential violations, eligibility problems, rule infractions, or disciplinary action of student-athletes immediately to your supervisor.
  • Assume additional duties and responsibilities as determined and assigned by the Director/Associate Director of Academic Support for Student Athletes and Senior Director of the Center for Academic Achievement.
